Out of the Blue

I am very stubborn about problem solving, which is one of the reasons I keep clinging to the hope that I will somehow straighten out the issues with my PC. I am, however, coming to the conclusion that there is an issue with my motherboard, as it's hard to come up with an explanation that encompasses the inconsistent results I'm getting from my troubleshooting. It's gotten to the point where I am strategizing my next build, so on some level I've given up the idea that this will be solved through software. The budget for this will have to go past the $0 I have earmarked, and my goal is to make a machine that's fast and quiet, which will make it that much harder to stay cheap. At this point I'm considering a last gen i5 like the 3570K and overclocking the snot out of it, perhaps using liquid cooling, though I haven't really investigated the cost/performance tradeoffs of getting a faster CPU and using air cooling, which will make the case and cooler cheaper.

That's a fair reason too, though the new Intels are pretty decent if you run them at < 50%, noise wise. They just don't cool well even at 100%.

I indeed may settle on the idea of a 4th Gen i5 and air cooling.

Just don't settle for the stock Intel cooler. Buy something decent from Thermaltake or Zalman if you're going to OC.

Also spend the 7 bucks on some Arctic Silver thermal paste. (Yes, it makes a big difference.)
I don't OC my hardwares and I still use third party fans because the stock CPU fans are loud. :/

Maybe I haven't been following, but Blue, did you replace the GPU and had the same problems? All problems you mentioned seemed to point to corrupt GPU with artifacts, etc. Most likely from a previous over heat?

Problems are similar with a different GPU. As for other questions, I know the 3rd gen and 4th gen i5s are priced similarly, but the 3s apparently overclock better than the 4s. The point about wanting a stable system is quite valid though, so I'm not sure how commuted I am to the overclocking... I imagined it might make for interesting discussion here, but imagining further discussion of my computer not working right makes is a little nauseous. I indeed may settle on the idea of a 4th Gen i5 and air cooling. Still working it out, and it looks like that pcpartspicker site looks like a great help.

Also, a footnote about my Corvette: The car has 113k hard miles and 14 hard years on it. It serves as our second car, has as much value as a decent used Camry with less wear.

Finally, I see these rollover ads have returned and will get on the case. Please forgive me if no one is available to address this before tomorrow since it's Sunday.

uh oh.....I think, my xbox just died.......

Join the club! Don't worry, though. Some MS senior level flunky said that "he had no concerns whatsoever" about the 180's quality.

Anyone who buys a 180 on release day is a fucking sucker and deserves to have it fucking melt.

eh, I won't be buying one anyway. I waited to get a 360 when those new power bricks came out at a different voltage, eagle/falcon or whatever they called it. Didn't matter. RROD. It was within 2 years, so they sent me a new one, that was nice of them, and I am still using it. The other one I have is in pices in a bag somewhere.

My ps3 fat up and harrier jetted on me. Couldn't be in the same room as that damn thing. I brought it to a certified ps3 fixit shop, and they did some "re route" or some shit. Said no dice. Bought the new 500gb red one....it is pretty nice. VERY QUIET. Can't even tell it is on.

/edit: Am actually bummed that Dead Rising 3 is only on XBone? Bummer....maybe a friend will buy one and I can hang out there for a couple of days. Really enjoy the DR games. Co-op was a blast.

Anyway. Anything you buy right now, even on the cheap end and 1 year old, will last a long time. Hardware isn't moving much. In the hardware section is my build, and it is still top of the line when playing games. Every game is still maxed out. I have OCd a bit, but I have liquid cooling and it runs like a champ.

That's Microsoft quality for you. Went through 3 Xbox360s. Neither of my PS3s have had any issues.

I fixed it....partially an oversight on my part, and partly a hardware issue...resolved.

That being said. I am on my 3rd xbox (first one was replaced under warranty and I still have that one) a used one went TangoUniform after some modding, but I didnt expect it to survive anyway.

I am also on my 2nd ps3, and I don't consider myself a heavy console user, so either way, the hardware that is out there is crap. My NES still works, so does my Sega Gensis. Originals of each. Oh, and both Ataris.

I just had a Polaris and Lee jeans (on the side ad) at the same time both were rollovers with video and sound. The polaris one is very frequent and being at the top seems to always pop up.
Hmm, I haven't had the lee or any video ads on the side. Could be ads are being pulled off from cookies. Which is not cool either.

Yeah I've been getting a bunch lately. Seems like a quarter of the ads are popout rollovers suddenly.

Glad it's just not me! Blue I'm sorry, I love your site, but until the video ads go away the ad blocker is going on. I know you really need the money but ads should not interfere with the use of your site!

Blue, I just got another roll over video ad! It's for polaris snowmobiles. I keep getting it when I reload the site. Heres a link to a screen shot of it. http://imgur.com/HOVDGnA This ad is super annoying because I don't even have to roll the cursor over the ad to triger it.

Also I don't trust liquid cooling. I still remember the days when they weren't as reliable as they are now. One pin hole and your computer just went through the car wash.
