Derek Paxton Overseeing All Stardock Development

Stardock announces a changing of the guard, as Derek Paxton has been promoted to vice president and will be overseeing all future games development and production at the studio. This is a role previously held by Stardock founder Brad Wardell, who clarifies for us: "I'm not retiring or anything. We're just in the process of expanding in a big way." Here's part of the announcement, which says we should expect new game revelations next month:

A modder-turned-studio-leader, Paxton was most recognized for his work on the Fall from Heaven mod for the popular Civilizations IV strategy game prior to joining Stardock as lead designer in 2010. Derek joined Stardock after a decade-long career working with Fortune 500 company Novell in the technology sector. Since joining Stardock in 2010, Paxton successfully brought to market the last two titles in the Elemental franchise – both of which earned positive critical receptions from top international games media and fans.

"Derek has really transformed the game studio," said Brad Wardell, President & CEO of Stardock. "His experience at managing multiple projects combined with his amazing design skills has resulted in not just better games but a better working environment for our teams."

As part of the company’s 20th anniversary this October, Paxton and Stardock Entertainment will announce a series of new projects from the studio which will include new titles and more.

"I'm looking forward to the incredible opportunity to lead a studio with a legacy of creating award-winning strategy games," said Paxton. "Games are a passion for everyone who works at Stardock Entertainment and it's an honor to be able to work with such talented developers, artists and designers. I look forward to continuing the tradition of creating incredible games with the amazing team at Stardock."

Win 8.1 does not bring back the start menu.. it brings back the start BUTTON and ONLY the button, not the functionality of the start menu.

Yes, that is another epic fail Although I think stardock is very happy about that. ^^
LOL thats hilarious. I didn't know the details because I care that little for win 8, I don't really care what little tweaks MS plans. But just bringing back the BUTTON and none of the functionality!!!? LOL classic MS

And it happened only two weeks before Brad's sexual harassment case goes to trial. What a coincidence.

Interesting ...

Losing Impulse, let alone losing Impulse to SteamDRM, is in no way a good thing.

Less competition means less choice which is a problem.

Impulse still exists... It's just owned and operated by GameStop, so for many people it may as well not.

Count me among those who rebought Demigod, SOASE, and the like on Steam just to avoid that bloated disaster.

Cool. Congrats Derek.

GalCiv 3?
I agree, congrats are in order. They went from the verge of bankruptcy to being healthy enough to expand significantly.
I'm going to guess this is from a few factors:
They dumped their own distribution platform off on Gamestop. They weren't really big enough compared to the others to keep running it at healthy profit.
They joined steam. Finally, I can get stardock games on steam. I've rebought nearly all that have come up in fact when they go on sale. They didn't join steam earlier because it was competing with impulse, but now that that's not a problem, they are getting many more sales.
They fixed up the elemental stuff from what I can tel.

And finally (this may be the biggest of all) start8 to return the start menu from windows 8. This is hugely popular. Hopefully they've leveraged that enough so that they won't crater after 8.1 comes out.

And yes, I would love to see a new galciv

I have to give them credit when credit is due. Its extremely rare in the gaming industry, but they rescued Elemental Enchantress out of the gutter and turned into one of the best fantasy RPG, and to give it away for free to the owners of the original is totally class act.

Keep up the good work.

Best fantasy RPG? So many things wrong in just a three-word phrase, it's kind of mind-boggling. Only the word "fantasy" applies to what they've done with Elemental. It's not "best" of anything and it's not an RPG.

Yeah, I was under the impression that it was a fantasy 4x game. RPG elements maybe...but that's about it.

It's the fantasy RPG version of Civilization with tactical combat. It has enough character progression, loot, quests, etc. that describing it as merely having RPG elements doesn't do it justice.

Best Fantasy RPG? Really? I haven't followed this title at all since it's bad release. Might need to check up what they've done to improve it. I have a lot of trust in Stardock after Galciv.
