BF4 Gamescom Details Wrap-up

BF4Central recaps the details they picked up at Gamescom about Battlefield 4, the upcoming military shooter sequel that's their site's main focus. Word is the game will launch with seven game modes and 10 multiplayer maps, and they note for comparison that Battlefield 3 launched with nine maps and five game modes. They also report that Battlefield 4 Commander mode will not be present in all game modes, and that it will only be used in objective based modes like Conquest, Rush, and Obliteration. Wrapping things up with some uncertainty, they point out that it has not yet been confirmed if all game modes will be playable on all maps.

Talk about a team wipe. I like the revived engineer who was going for the point blank RPG shot and still got wasted.

That video is almost as much of an indictment against the Metro map as it is lack of VOIP.

DICE. VOIP. Get it right this time.

Must be HC mode, because I have never killed anyone let alone multiple individuals with less than 10 rounds. It is sick.

Even on normal it takes about 4 to 5 hits... if you know your weapon stats ,p And only 2 hits when headshot.

Anyone think they offer TOO MUCH content? Then adding MORE just makes it worse? THere are lots of maps and types that aren't played at all. I notice several maps and types empty in BF3.

Kinda wish EA would realize that 1 big expansion is better than 5 small ones....

What annoys me about Dice is that they never listen to the community, its cos they think they are better. No voip, no map editor and now the community is now just a bunch of adultescent kids who just bitch and troll all posts.

yes im in for a built in voip being superior to private comms (at least for me). im not a clan member nor do i have a regular group... so its important that when i join a random squad, usually because it has more members than the default one the game assigned me to, that i can chat with the squad. also helps with commander mode a ton, and i like commander mode personally. it was a bit stripped down in 2142 but with BF2 it was a blast hauling ass or hunkering down when you heard the incoming artillery. commander would help control the vehicles a bit too, in BF3 sometimes you get screwed when the enemy has competent tanks and LAVs, and if that wasnt bad enough some assholes stole all your teams vehicles as well.

if someone leaves their mic on, or its a dumbass, i can hit mute on that player, problem solved.

They'll have an open beta next month so we will see before release.

Dice is treating it as nothing more than a stress test, they usually pick a stable yet older build to do this with. Any broken or missing features are just assumed to be made to work by release. Everyone likes to spew "It's BETA!!!" when you complain about said missing or broken features.

An open mic in your ear with some fools horrible music playing in the background, people speaking foreign languages, people trying to be armchair generals bossing everyone around.

That's my experience with voice chat in games that have it.

It's only squad level VoIP right now and will have toggle/mute features supposedly. If you don't want it then don't use it. I will only use it for the odd time I pub but it will save countless annoying typing sessions where the situation you were trying to warn a squaddie about has already happened and help with basic coordination of things in game. Just even the ability to tell someone to hop in or that its good to spawn/etc would be great.

I just really hope they don't release it in a horrible buggy mess like they did with MoH:Warfighter. They set it to always on and voice activated by default at release.

I would never put it past Dice to fuck something up with a PC release so let's just hope they don't do it here.

If you're pubbing that's one thing, though why anyone pubs in shooters is beyond me to begin with. Other wise it's a one click bookmark on TS to get on with all your friends, it's not rocket science.

Some people can't always play with friends, it's not rocket science. Pubbing largely sucks because of the lack of coordination and voice chat helps with that.

eh I get what you're saying, personally however the lack of VOIP doesn't bother me one bit, the fewer 12 year olds I have to hear swearing every time they die, in the few times I do play shooters online the better imo.

VOIP?

There's this thing called teamspeak you know. Never understood why people want games to do their own VOIP, when teamspeak works just fine.

Yea, because when I get home & want to jump into a quick game it'll be fun setting up a whole separate solution to communicate in BF. Teamspeak is great for people that are in serious gaming clans or groups of close friends that play on a regular basis. For the casual player that wants to jump on a server & get some communication & teamwork going...Yea not so much.

The game has VoIP but to answer your rant - standardized, built in VOIP is important because it ensures the ability to communicate effectively with the team is something that can be utilized by everyone. In a teamwork intensive game like Battlefield that matters. There are a half dozen different voice chat services on the PC and no standard that allows them to inter-communicate so your suggestion is only marginally useful for servers that host their own or playing with RL friends only.

It's 2013, voice chat is expected functionality so it should be built in. If the consoles can do it then surely EA can license a codec and do it too. There is really no argument against voice chat (you can always mute people or turn it off if you dont like it) and several for it. Better yet tie it into Origin and expose it properly in the interface so people will actually use it.

Yeah, my squad uses Skype usually (RL friends). But we'll see how well VOIP works, especially with 5 man squads now we may have a random floater or 2 some nights and with how the squad perks work, it might be worthwhile....maybe.. Can always mute I guess lol.
