Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Expansion Announced

Blizzard announces Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, saying the first expansion for Diablo III will raise the game's level cap to 70, add new randomized and end-game content, and more, though there's no word that it will remove the Auction House that admittedly harmed the game. This trailer is the opening cinematic, with a link in the description back to the Reaper of Souls teaser page discovered last week, showing the action/RPG expansion will focus on destroying the soul stone that keeps causing so much trouble in a conflict against Death (and not the sexy Thanos' girlfriend version). There's also this gameplay teaser clip which introduces the new Crusader class, new environments, new monsters, and more. Here's part of the announcement: :

In addition to taking the story of Diablo III from the legendary city of Westmarch to the unhallowed halls of the Pandemonium Fortress in Act V and introducing the incorruptible Crusader class, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls increases the game’s level cap to 70. Players continuing on with their existing Barbarian, Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, Wizard, and Monk characters will benefit from an array of fearsome new spells and abilities as they advance in level.

The expansion also accentuates the key features of the Diablo franchise, with a greater emphasis on randomized environments to explore; epic new quests; horrific new monsters to defeat; and substantial updates to the loot experience, enabling players to further customize their characters with new and improved multilevel Legendary items, new Blacksmith and Jeweler item-crafting options, and more.

Diablo III’s Paragon progression system is also being majorly upgraded for the expansion, adding even more end-game character advancement and replayability. Two new game modes—Loot Runs and Nephalem Trials—are being added as well, providing fun and rewarding challenges for players to tackle when they’re not busy saving the world.

Malthael, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom, returns as the Angel of Death in Diablo III's first expansion set: Reaper of Souls. Having seized the Black Soulstone and slain most of the guards protecting it, it now falls to players to track down Malthael and stop him before he unleashes irreversible havoc on the world. Fortunately, a new hero is ready to join the cause and bring Malthael to justice—the Crusader, a fierce melee warrior whose command of the battlefield is matched only by his unwavering conviction and uncompromising dedication to the Light.

Sounds like they are at least saying they are going to address the majority of the problems with D3. Will be interesting to see if they can actually do so. Only one new class seems disappointing.

That said, all the people pretending D3 was the worst thing they ever played... Rolleyes

When compared with the previous games in the series, it most certain was!

Oh, so you weren't horrified by how D3 turned out? I'd say D3 is still a horror experience

Blizzard's catering to a younger crowd these days. I think they let WoW go to their head and unfortunately the beloved more mature Diablo is long gone. What we have now is a WoW in a darker universe that doesn't try to be unforgiving. I agree, the cinematics are always nice and clean, but the writing and dialogue, especially the in-game cinematics are atrociously bad.

This. Blizzard seems to have forgotten that Diablo was a Horror experience first and foremost. I would have forgiven all of D3's faults had they kept the atmosphere of the original games. D3's story isnt bad per se, its just told with so much handholding and without even a hint of mystery that it loses most of its charm a few minutes into the storyline.

Dont even get me started on the skill trees and character progression. Again. Dont. Feels like a goddamn WoW expansion blurb, YEAH FOR 10 MORE LEVELS!!!!! Fuck you Blizzard.

I think its even worse then that, as atleast in wow you could spec your charactor differently

Blizzard's solution to cookie cutter builds was to hand people a box of animal crackers.

Awesome cinematic as usual, but I stopped playing Diablo 3 a long time ago. I got to Belial and just lost interest.

Much rather play Diablo 2 (and still do!). I even like the 2D sprites better than all the 3D stuff in D3. It just has a certain feel to it.

I agree, top notch cinematics as usual. The writing of the cinematics was pretty shit though. And the whole "Angle of Death" thing is so played out, Blizzard. You used to be so creative...

2013 has to be the year of the return of ARPG's.

I'm not sure why you'd pick this turd when there is quality to be had a $0 to $20 in this shallow but semi-addicting genre.

In a few years, folks will start listing this game in the "all time most disappointing major games" lists.

Blizzard honestly believed their Diablo fans must of been under 15 years old and they could trick everyone into the RMAH. Considering the average longtime Diablo fan is probably in his mid to late 20s, it's rather insulting.

Then they throw together this half ass expansion. Even D2 added 2 characters. Wtf, aren't we suppose to improve upon the last? What the hell have they learned? I hate getting suckered into their CE since they come with some fun shiet, but honestly, I HATE giving Blizzard anymore of my money!!! Ahhh! They are getting worse than EA on my hate o meter!

The CEO's behind EA, Activision, et al, are best friends that wine and dine to multimillion dollar yachts, at your expense. Enjoy the expansion!

Drop the RMAH and redesign the itemization and loot tables. Result: great game. I actually thought the slaying of monsters in D3 was much more fun than in past Diablos, which is important because that's how you spend the majority of the game. The trouble was that the loot was such garbage that it felt like there was no reward for slaying said monsters.

So In about 1 evening, we'll all go from lvl 60 to 70, and an hour into finding free drops on the ground, that will have better stats than the bought items of last year to date, seding rage to the masses which already dropped $250RMAH dollars to Blizzard's coffers.

Can't wait to rinse and repeat to lvl 80 in Act VI in late 2015!

I destroyed all trace of Blizzard products from my software shelf, they are banned from my generation to come, I won't be soiling my computer's CPU registers with their game code ever again. Their forum still provides a sense of mindless entertainment, as half of their posts are all propaganda that mess with the audiences psychology, which keeps them hooked to fuel the traffic. If one thing Blizzard got right, is to keep their folks 'entertained' even if not actually playing their games.

Damnit. The only thing D3 needs in my mind is character progression and it doesn't seem like they'll fix that. They said they're going to improve the paragon system, so maybe it's going to be a little like that, but I never even got a character up to level 60 before being bored by the lack of customization.
Also, only one new class?

Not even close to the worst thing ever played. Most disappointing? Absolutely. Less than a week of mediocre playtime was not was I expected from D3.

I still find their insistence they had no idea how damaging the Auction Houses would be ridiculous. The loot system was tuned to make using the AH extremely advantageous. So was the stats system as there was really only 1 primary stat you needed to worry about, with only 1-2 secondary stats like crit or regen. Oh and magic find, since without it you're chances of actually getting something you want go from crap to nil.

1 new class and 10 more levels...seems like a pretty piss poor expansion. I'll wait for reviews, definitely not preordering, but i'll probably get it eventually just out of morbid curiosity eventually. Honestly though, i'm 100x more pumped for act3x and act4 for poe.
