BF4 Open Beta in October; BF4 Premium & Battlepacks Detailed

EA and DICE unveil Battlefield 4 Premium, a bundle for their upcoming military shooter sequel offering a DLC subscription, early access, and other perks. They also announce plans for a multiplayer beta in October, saying this will be open to all platforms, with three days of early access for those who pre-order the Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe Edition or who own either Battlefield 3 Premium, Medal of Honor Warfighter Digital Deluxe, or Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition (but apparently not Battlefield 4 Premium). There is a new Paracel Storm multiplayer trailer on the Battlefield Blog along with details on premium and the beta, saying of the latter: "DICE GM Karl-Magnus Troedsson also revealed the Battlefield 4 open beta. Available for all gamers on PC, X360, and PS4, the beta will feature the Siege of Shanghai map in the classic Battlefield Conquest mode. Battlefield 3 Premium members and those who pre-order the Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe Edition will have access to the exclusive beta early October for three days. Following that, the open beta will kick off. This will be the perfect opportunity for everyone to Prepare 4 Battle before the October 29 launch." They also offer this trailer hyping the premium bundle. Here's a rundown on all of that along with word on Battlefield 4 Battlepacks, and the "all-new layer of persistence and an exciting element of chance" they add to the game's multiplayer progression system:

COLOGNE, Germany – Aug. 20, 2013 – DICE, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) studio, today announced Battlefield 4™ Premium, an exclusive membership for Battlefield™ fans that provides a wealth of new content to keep the action going all year long. Battlefield 4 Premium members will receive five themed digital expansion packs: Battlefield 4 China Rising, Battlefield 4 Second Assault, Battlefield 4 Naval Strike, Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth and Battlefield 4 Final Stand; and will also be granted two-weeks early access* to each. With Battlefield 4 Premium, DICE will serve up weekly content and unique personalization options so players can dominate the battlefield in style.

“Fan reaction to Battlefield 3 Premium has been nothing short of amazing. We are humbled to see more than 4 million people join in,” said Patrick Bach, Executive Producer, Battlefield 4. “With Battlefield 4 Premium we continue to roll out the red carpet, treating our fans like VIPs with a massive amount of new gameplay, exclusive new content and even more benefits at an incredible value.”

Battlefield 4 Premium membership includes five digital expansion packs** featuring new multiplayer maps and in-game content:

  • Battlefield 4 Second Assault – Includes four fan-favorite Battlefield 3™ maps now re-imagined with the power of Frostbite™ 3. Available first on Xbox One.
  • Battlefield 4 China Rising – Players fight for dominance across the vast and majestic Chinese mainland. Available December 2013.
  • Battlefield 4 Naval Strike – Experience dynamic ocean combat as the Chinese armada takes the fight to the sea. Available Spring 2014.
  • Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth – The US strikes back engaging in all-out urban warfare. Available Summer 2014.
  • Battlefield 4 Final Stand – Bring the war to its epic conclusion. Available Summer 2014.
  • Two-weeks early access to all expansion packs for that competitive edge
  • Unique personalization options including camos, paints, emblems, dogtags and more
  • Priority position in server queues
  • New content every week
  • 12 bonus Battlefield 4 Battlepacks
  • Transfer Battlefield 4 Premium membership from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4

Battlefield 4 Battlepacks add an all-new layer of persistence and an exciting element of chance to the multiplayer progression system in Battlefield 4. Through the course of a player’s multiplayer career, they will receive packs containing random combinations of new camos, dog tags, knives, XP boosts, and gun attachments. In addition to what players will earn in-game through normal play, Battlefield 4 Premium members will receive the 12 bonus Battlefield 4 Battlepacks.

DICE also announced today the Battlefield 4 multiplayer beta*** will start in early October and will be exclusive for Battlefield 3 Premium owners, those that pre-ordered Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe, and owners of Medal of Honor Warfighter Digital Deluxe and Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition for three days. Following that, DICE will host an open beta for all gamers worldwide and will feature the Siege of Shanghai map on the popular Conquest mode. Players will experience the next level of all-out warfare with a new design concept called Levolution, which creates a dynamic environment that reacts to the player’s every move to ensure no two games are alike. The Battlefield 4 multiplayer beta will be available for the Xbox 360® games and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC.

Battlefield 4 will be available October 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Battlefield 4 will also be available for Xbox One®, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and the PlayStation®4 at a later date. Battlefield 4 Premium will be available on these platforms for $50. ...watched this trailer. GFX look top-notch, but is there anything new, really? I played *a lot* of BF2 and BF3 with all expansion packs, but I'm tired of 'modern warfare' with fast jets, guided missles and laserlights. I wrote this when BF3 was announced:

--- CUT ----------------------

Hmmm... I hoped for something like BF 14-18 since we already have modern warfare in BF2 and sci-fi warfare in BF2142...
14-18 with trenches, gas, bi-planes and zeppelins, massive artillery, commander mode with spotter-balloons and runners, over-the-top attacks, the first tanks, 128-player servers etc etc. Could be fun when done the right way.

---- CUT ---------------------

...I still think this way. Could be awesome and refreshing over all the modern variables out there.

Trying to skip this and Ghosts.

Yeah, sheesh, stuff drops so fast I don't even have time to get worked up about it. It's like, fuck, I would buy stuff at 30 or $40 occasionally if it wasn't itinerating every year and the old one drops to $5. The math's too clear on that one.

Case in point, fully prepared to drop 60 for GTA

I don't know, the whole thing looks like an expansion pack for BF3. I think I might just sit this one out. BF3 was fun and I can't say I didn't get my moneys worth but it was poorly balanced and ultimately unsatisfying unless you play with friends 24/7. Hell even then pub stomping gets old fast and the game has no real competitive community to speak of.

I got BF 4 strictly for the sp campaign. Have had enough of BF 3 multi to last me a lifetime. Nope. It is sp all the way for me. Sp immersion. Hopefully the visuals live up to the hype.

The first "expansion pack" includes 4 BF3 maps and xbone gets a head start on that one.
Second expansion pack everyone gets it who preorder the game.

Completely agree. BF3 was fun, but quickly lost that with all the hacking and blatant cheats. I'll care about buying BF4, as much as EA cared about hacks/cheats, which was not at all...
Doesn't this all the time for each game?

Absolutely you see people 'call out' hackers from anyone who does well. But my experience has been getting one shot killed from impossible locations (not snipeable), and emptying weapons into certain players from point blank and not making an impact to them. Those are hackers, and EA does nothing about them. Sure I see constantly people getting kicked for hacks, but it's not like they're banned right away for life.

I was playing this week and got called a hacker a number of times, I didn't notice anyone else did during those games. A few were pretty excited about what I was doing, but I wasn't aware using a starting level LMG and mowing down idiots who bottle neck was considered a hack..... I routinley have a top 3 score in BF3 and I am very low level. I think most people don' tunderstand these games and generally don't really know how to play. I constantly drop packs for teammates in fire fights and my score looks like the national debt clock. I also lay down a lot of fire to let my team move up and will ambush the enemy at cap points.

I dunno. The game is pretty simple, not sure why so many people suck at it. I didn't see any scores or KD that indicated cheaters - but there are 2 million more players now than last month, so them being new is probably helping my score. hahahhaha

as for hackers... i've played for almost 600 hours ( http://bf3stats.com/stats_pc/deejayslick ), and i've seen about 4-5 hackers.

People are just dumb and call hacks on anything they can't comprehend, which is a long list in a game with so many MP variables in a realtime open world game arena.

talk to me when you get 1 shot from across the map by an ammo box, and then we can talk about REAL hackers. so far i haven't met anyone (sans 4-5 actual hackers) i can't beat on my best day.

So basically you pay $49.99/59.99 for the game & then an additional $49.99 for the "Premium pack"....Over $100.00 for the full BF4 experience! WOW!

not really sure why i have to post this everytime this comes up, but oh well... FACTS:

BF1942 and all expansions = $110usd

BF2 and all expansions = $110usd

BF3 and all expansions = $110usd

sooooo... not much of a surprize here... i sure do hate it when people all of a suddan do the exact same thing they're been doing for the past 10 years, i hate that!

in short, if you've actually played a BF game before and didn't like it, or thought that it was "CoD-ish" then the game clearly isn't for you. if you haven't played a BF game yet, you get to try the open beta for free, which yes, is a glorified demo. difference is "timed demo" sounds bad, where as "beta" sounds cool, and still will only exist for 2 weeks in october, so don't miss it. make your judgements once you've tried it.

Sooo... every other MP game can get anti-cheat right but with the BF series we're supposed to "look for admins" because....? It's not a good enough game for that. Overlooking that massive, massive flaw and all the others is just too much for what is supposed to be a AAA game.

Every other MP game has anti-cheating done correctly? Are you serious? There are cheaters in EVERY game; the more popular the game, the more cheaters. It's an annoying aspect of online gaming that probably isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I could see the argument that client side hit detection makes cheating easier, but even if it was server side, there would still be cheaters. Look at CS and CS:S, Day of Defeat, Quake 1-3, you name it.

Punkbuster, as maligned as it is, bans thousands of people a month on average. Those that don't cheat egregiously are still pretty easy to spot, in my opinion, and there are enough BF3 servers (and eventually BF4) that you can just move to another game, if you can't just overcome them, which is usually doable anyway.

Don't get me wrong, cheat detection could be better, and ban waves could definitely happen more often, but what are you going to do, never play online games again because a cheater might join a server?

Hrm, one can only hope. I know BF3 is unpopular on bluesnews, but holy shit, that is easily the most fun I've had in multiplayer in quite some time. Conquest Large, of course. Armored Kill, Aftermath and Default maps. Any other mode... good luck.

I miss the days of FPS games without unlocks, but it seems that era is dead and gone. I don't think I'm ready to give up FPS games entirely, and I still really love driving the tanks/apcs/jeeps around, destroying everything on land, sea and air. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be had in shooting down jets and helos with the tank.

Based on my current playtime for BF3, $110 is still going to be significantly less than 50 cents an hour, so, even if I can't wait for a sale, I'm not going to sweat it that much. Besides, you can always make it back on Steam sales, Humble Bundles, GOG, GMG, Gamersgate etc.

Well, it has been like this since BF1942, with the exception of Vietnam and 2142, as they were'nt successful enough for EAs taste to monetize addons.

I really enjoy BF3 and still play it with my mates so this is a sure buy for us. Even at $100 with Premium, that is fair value to me considering how many fun hours I get out of it. Each customer has to decide on their own what their $:happies is.

As for hacking, I don't know what you guys are complaining about. Just play on servers with active admins. When we do see a hacker, which definitely isn't nearly as often as you folks seem to be experiencing them, they just get banned within a few minutes. No anti-cheat system is perfect (least of which is Punkbuster), good admins will always be the best line of defense.

Anyway, to each their own. See ya's on the Battlefield! (or not!)
