No GFWL for Batman: Arkham Origins - GFWL & AOE Online Ending Next Year?

Batman: Arkham Origins will not use Games for Windows Live, reports IGN, saying WBIE has confirmed that the new installment in the stealth/action series uses Steamworks for achievements and multiplayer support. There was no multiplayer in the first two games in the Arkham series, but they both used GFWL for achievement tracking. This news comes shortly after news that the Xbox.com PC Marketplace (formerly the Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace) will close this week, and word from Capcom that Ultra Street Fighter IV will likewise drop Games for Windows Live after using this on previous games including Super Street Fighter IV. On the heals of all this, Polygon reports on a now-removed support update from Microsoft that announced the Games for Windows Live service will end in July 2014. Here's what they report the update said:
Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.

Unless he's looking to retire, I'm pretty certain Gabe would turn down any offer from Microsoft. Any offer. Losing control of Valve isn't worth the billions they'd offer, especially as he probably believes he can make that with Valve, anyway.

I don't even think they could be convinced to partner with Microsoft - I don't think there's a single thing Microsoft could offer that Valve would want.

Because we rather use Valve DRM! I hate GFWL as much as the next guy but you all still use DRM every day on your PC games.

I really don't think there are any single player games where GFWL requires an online connection, you just have to make an offline profile for each game (an option that's easy to miss).

Bulletstorm required an online profile. You could not play without it.

Fortunately, most GFW games allow offline play. But not all of them.

The fix would be fake "GFWL" registration server software that you load on your machine. A small executable that pretends to be the MS server, authorizing whatever bullshittery the game needs it to. This would keep games without an active publisher/developer from being completely cut out. Now, it won't fix multiplayer issues, but it'd at least be a solution for being able to play games SP.
Such a solution would also involve messing around with your computer's hosts file to redirect requests from MS's servers to localhost...
If that's the case then you just might as well get proper game cracks that would not require gfwl at all.

Jesus tap-dancing Christ, no fucking way! Microsoft is a giant fuck-up. They don't need to be within 10 miles of Steam, never mind buying it.

So what happens to the games that require GFWL?

They become broken and worthless. All 73 games that require GFWL plus DLC. All of it goes to hell.

I will not install/use any pirate tool to make them function and replacing the DRM with Steamworks is out of the question.

That seems to me to be the correct answer. There are several Single Player games that on install require GFWL setup. With it out of the equation, those installs will now fail, unless patched. This does f'up a number of games. Now chances are I wasn't planning on going back, but I know how this bunches panties in gameland.

Also to the MS buy Steam, hellz no! The person who wrote that should be banned!!! LOL

Also to another conversation, is the hate around Origin/Uplay etc just because it's another game launcher where as you only want one? I can see you wanting a single point, but I think the venom towards other services is well overboard then. They have a right to compete to. I figured the hate was because many had some type of technical issue with it. I have pretty much all, they all seem to work straight forward and well enough. I don't sweat it as I can fathom that maintaining multiple launchers is considered work these days.

While I have no love or hate for GFWL, MS just shutting it off is a big problem. There are many games that use it as it's DRM, and many still use it as requirement before even letting you save your game. The Patch for these games should NOT come from the developer, it has to come from Microsoft. A final "patch" to GFWL that makes all "online" profiles "offline" and makes each program think it's online, that way when a game goes to check if you're online before it saves to your HD, it just gets the go ahead from the GFWL crap that still installed on the system. That way all the devs, especially the ones that are no longer in business, don't have to do a thing.

As a mainly offline gamer, I don't care about GFWL being shutdown, but as a gamer I am pretty dam concerned that I won't be able to play a number of games I bought because it needs GFWL to even function as a single player game.

PC Market thrives on competition, not monopoly!

Sorry, I completely disagree. The PC market needs a monopoly to thrive. There are so many various combinations of PC hardware / software nowadays that it is getting really hard (and expensive) to support everything available to consumers. People love Steam because of the simple interface and the fact that most games are available on that digital distribution platform. I personally want just ONE place to get all my games, as do most people. Why do you think everyone despises Origin? Forcing people to use a digital distribution system to play your games instead of catering to the masses (Steam) was a really poor business decision and it just causes customer backlash. It is really no wonder why people are jumping from the PC ship.

You have no idea what drives growth and innovation do you?? You are wrong.

Actually, I do, and the PC market has been slowly fading away. Half-assed ports started showing up when the console gaming market exploded and PC gamers have been burned multiple times as a result on some pretty well known AAA titles. GTA4 ring a bell? The list goes on. 15-20 years ago, the PC market dominated because you simply couldn't get PC quality titles on your Nintendo or Genesis. Oh, how the tables have turned...

More than likely its because MS will be releasing the next iteration, the one that goes with xbox one and windows 8.

But then again it could just be because MS hates PC gamers and this is how they are rededicating themselves to it. I bet none of the GFWL games will bother remaking themselves for steam instead.
