No GFWL for Batman: Arkham Origins - GFWL & AOE Online Ending Next Year?

Batman: Arkham Origins will not use Games for Windows Live, reports IGN, saying WBIE has confirmed that the new installment in the stealth/action series uses Steamworks for achievements and multiplayer support. There was no multiplayer in the first two games in the Arkham series, but they both used GFWL for achievement tracking. This news comes shortly after news that the Xbox.com PC Marketplace (formerly the Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace) will close this week, and word from Capcom that Ultra Street Fighter IV will likewise drop Games for Windows Live after using this on previous games including Super Street Fighter IV. On the heals of all this, Polygon reports on a now-removed support update from Microsoft that announced the Games for Windows Live service will end in July 2014. Here's what they report the update said:

Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.

Wait, wait, wait. GTA4+addons require GFWL (and I believe for multiplayer...)
Will Rockstar patch the game?

I suspect it'll be more like MS will dump it and all support for any GFWL games entirely - so much for their support for PC gaming. Then some people will wage a class-action suit and force MS to patch the games to play offline.

About fucking time. Seriously, nobody accepted that horse shit. Goodbye and good riddance Microsuck. Stick to X1, we don't need or want you. Keep your DRM diarrhea on consoles. This is about the best news I've heard in a long time.

Hrm, I hope GFWL fades into obscurity, but I hope every studio is somehow able to scramble and patch together some workaround for their existing games that are infected with that crap.

I can't be the only one with a dozen or more Steam/Gamersgate/GMG sale titles sitting around that just got a(possible) time limit.

Once again, people will have to resort to downloading cracks to play their legitimately purchased games, gg failed DRM schemes.

I recall reading that this is only true for the storefront of GFWL, not the login servers.
That said, AoE:O has way too much competition from it's own franchise to stay around, no wonder they take it down asap.

So what happens to the games that require GFWL?
It would be equivalent to playing them offline, I'd assume.

Some game required it be installed and working. Online no matter.

Other than that small point, this is the most distinctive move I've seen MS in supporting the PC. You are supporting pc's retiring this turd.

Blue, you have a typo. "On the heals of all this" should be "On the heels of all this".
