Titan "Unlikely" to be Subscription-Based

In a post-earnings conference call related to the story above, Activision CEO Mike Morhaime revealed that Activision Blizzard is going back to the drawing board a bit with their upcoming MMORPG codenamed Titan, reports Joystiq. Word is this includes the game's business model, as they seem to be concluding that in spite of their unprecedented success with World of Warcraft, Titan cannot rely on subscriptions. "We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

The only people coming out ahead in FTP games are casuals who play for free, aka freeloaders. Average or hardcore players who don't want to be restricted on content end up paying more than a normal monthly fee on average, to make up the difference. Sure, FTP is great...if you're a casual noob who just wants to check the game out, play occasionally, etc. However, the players that actually keep the game afloat are getting screwed. I predict the FTP trend actually reverses itself in the next decade as more and more people catch on to this fad.

Yep. Even a game with basically 10 times more subs than any other game with a sub (or had one), that $15 x millions per month isn't enough still. The good news is most FTP games I've played I average maybe $15 spent. I'm happy for the mega rich for once and them dropping $1000's, keep it com'in. I think nothing of your maxed out characters, I just run past you like the rest, I don't see you or really anyone. I play a mmo like a single/small coop game. Yep that is what the genre has evolved to for many. Just doing the content like a single/coop rpg, running past others as if they are cardboard.
I read that as file transfer protocol instead of F2P. Haha.

I'll believe it when I see it. I bet they will offer subscriptions for it, even if its an optional thing.

And has the move towards ever more DLC (where people pay 2 or 3 times what the original game cost, for silly things, many of which isn't even additional content) reversed itself yet? I think it will take significantly more than a decade for a move away from FTP to happen.

Blue makes a good point about the ludicrous financial success of WoW. Sure, OTHER companies need to make the calculation that they're not going to produce the next WoW, so a high budget subscription based MMO is a tall order. But you'd think Blizzard has a shot at it.

This.

They have learnt that players shouldn't feel the need to buy gear for real money that would take you literally years to farm.

Subscription never bothered me. I quit because it is boring. In practice, 5/10 times I quit within 3 months because it is stupid and boring and grinds my gears the wrong way.

I doubt it'll be a RMAH structure as Titan is likely to be slated as a more casual-friendly game as Kotick said some time ago. RMAH would basically reward the more hardcore players who can afford to farm for or dump a chunk of money to pay to win whatever end game there may be whereas the casuals will likely be much more reserved towards spending money on something they may not need or will not be able to take full advantage of.

If anything, it's likely just going to be a Blizzard store with perks such as those found in the GW2 store. If GW2 can survive and push out content by depending on in game transactions after the box purchase, I doubt Blizzard would have much issue as their name on the box would ensure a healthy number of folks who already throw money at their screen to buy shitty transmog helmets and mounts.

I don't know about the Diablo RMAH thing. Blizzard has said they kind of regret implementing the RMAH because of the issues it has caused both with dealing with transaction issues and adjusting stats on items already purchased. I don't think they'll do that again, but rather sell in-game equipment directly from a Blizzard store in-game or on the web.

No subs, but to be competitive you'll have to buy stuff in ActiBlizz's real money auction house. PROFIT $$$$!!!!

Hopefully they follow GW2. Let me pay for the game and include a lot of stuff with it, but then sell a few other perks to fund it. That way I have no pressure to login if I want to play something else.

Nice, as predicted back in September...good to see they didn't waste too much time being straightforward with that.
