Steamships Ahoy - Shadowrun Returns

Shadowrun Returns has unlocked on Steam, marking the official release of this tactical RPG reboot from Harebrained Studios. The game is available as a standard edition and there is also a deluxe edition, which includes a soundtrack and a digital anthology chronicling the series and the creation of the new installment. Here's the elevator pitch on the game:
MAN MEETS MAGIC & MACHINE. The year is 2054. Magic has returned to the world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Technology merges with flesh and consciousness. Elves, trolls, orks and dwarves walk among us, while ruthless corporations bleed the world dry. You are a shadowrunner - a mercenary living on the fringes of society, in the shadows of massive corporate arcologies, surviving day-by-day on skill and instinct alone. When the powerful or the desperate need a job done, you get it done... by any means necessary.

In the urban sprawl of the Seattle metroplex, the search for a mysterious killer sets you on a trail that leads from the darkest slums to the city’s most powerful megacorps. You will need to tread carefully, enlist the aid of other runners, and master powerful forces of technology and magic in order to emerge from the shadows of Seattle unscathed.

The unique cyberpunk-meets-fantasy world of Shadowrun has gained a huge cult following since its creation nearly 25 years ago. Now, creator Jordan Weisman returns to the world of Shadowrun, modernizing this classic game setting as a single player, turn-based tactical RPG.

Emh. yeah, you make good points as well. I can wait and see what happens. I guess I'd say I'm dissapointed, but only very mildly so far. I don't understand where some of the seething rage is coming from with other people on their forums and what not. Seriously, it's not that bad.

I saw some of that on the steam boards as well, and was scratching my head. I'm not sure if they just didn't understand the style of game (and thought they were getting something else) or what...

For the money I can't really complain too much, but I honestly expected this was going to be somewhat 'meatier' if you take my meaning.

I really don't mean to antagonize here, but don't you think that might be wishful thinking on your part? Nor am I trying to sound like a smartass, but personally, the complexity and feature set are in line with my expectations given the budget they had to work with, the development timeline on new technology, and the emphasis they clearly put on presentation and writing robust editing tools in terms of resource allocation.

And I have to say, I'm actually kind of on board with that. I lament the general trend toward dumbing down games as much as anyone, but somehow I'm actually in the mood right now for a "CRPG light", or perhaps a point-and-click adventure with some light combat elements. Simple mechanics don't always need to be dumb per se anyway. In this kind of game, dumb would mainly be dumb writing for me, for example ...

Checkpoint saving sucks, though. And yeah, I do expect much more complex mechanics from Project Eternity, but then that was a really big part of their pitch, which I don't think has been the case for SR. PE has to allocate their dev resources accordingly to make that happen. Wasteland 2, not sure - somewhere in the middle I guess? I do want good writing out of W2.

Woot - glad to hear!

Thanks. It's bittersweet for me - of course I have a family to support and bills to pay but the working environment is so toxic and so hostile that I often come home from work feeling physically ill. At least I have a paycheck coming in now while I job search, so that's something. I appreciate all of the well-wishes.

Yeah, it's harsh tokes. Hope you can find something better fast. Few thing worse than working in a toxic environment when you know it's likely on limited time too. Dunno how much the general economy will affect where you are specifically, but it sure doesn't make things easier these days. I've been bouncing around a bit over the last 2 years - which was my own fault for leaving a secure yet unrewarding gig. Won't be doing that again anytime soon.

Anyway, the game so far is a mixed bag, the lack of saves is a PITA so far but not a deal breaker. All in all it feels a little too CRPG-lite right now. We'll see if between HBS and the community they can rectify it. I certainly expect a *lot* more from Project Eternity and Wasteland 2. Depending on how they pan out don't think I'll be backing anymore KS' for this sort of stuff at this point however. For the money I can't really complain too much, but I honestly expected this was going to be somewhat 'meatier' if you take my meaning.

Very sad that I did not have chance to try this today - I've got a million things to take care of during the day after working all night (I got my job back after the union took the issue to arbitration) so no time for gaming. From what I've read the checkpoint saves are the only major complaint about the game. I've heard grumblings about campaign length here and there but given that the game is built to be added to I doubt that will be an issue for very long after release.

This game has no inventory? How does acquiring weapons work? No inventory sounds pretty boring.

Besides the art direction and the Shadowrun universe what's there to recommend about the game?

The potential for a never ending stream of modules created by the community, much like Neverwinter Nights the game includes a complete toolset.

There were a ton of great NWN mods over the years, I fully expect the same to happen with this.

What's with the terrible checkpoint based save system in an RPG game? Come on.

Either a horrible design flaw or they want you to have to live with the choices you make rather than quicksave/quickload until you get the outcome you desire.

While I've only played a very little bit, I'd say it's the latter. At any rate loving it so far, great writing and style and it's about as a perfect homage to the 16-bit Shadowrun titles as you could get. Can't wait to see what people do with the editor.

The mod/campaign authors will be able to place checkpoints as they like I'm sure. But it would be nice for them to implement a quicksave, one that can be enabled/disabled according to a campaign setting that the author sets.

Blech, this game feels like an iOS game that was ported to PC. Checkpoint save system, shallow combat, horrible interface. Graphics/atmosphere is the only real positive here.
