Home 3D was a shameless attempt to sell more TV's after everyone had already bought HDTV's.
Not everyone has HDTVs. I don't have a HDTV yet.

You really don't need to remind us that you have old stuff so often, we just assume at this point that you'll be running Windows 3.1 and watching a wooden boxed tube TV until the end of time

Any topic involving technology = Ant post talking about the older equivalent.
Uh, I don't have a wooden tube TV and Windows 3.1. My parents still have their wooden CRT TV though from the 1980s/80s!

3D is just a distraction, also I'd rather they kept good quality contents and didn't sacrifice part of the budget for this silliness.

Hopefully the film industry will realise that eventually.

What they realize is that DVD sales have cratered and they want a new revenue stream to make up for it.
No consumer ever asked for 3DTV (many did for theaters, sadly), and it gives studios a way to make more money for the same product. They may be sacrificing things for budget, but when it brings in an extra $5 per ticket they don't much care.

It'll die, but then they'll find some other way. We've already had two movies with "supertickets." Lucas and Spielberg are predicting movie prices to rise somewhere over $20 and theaters to convert themselves from uncomfortable places to ones flowing with luxury.

It's hard to make back a $200 million dollar budget when you can't count on $50 million in DVD sales. Of course, most of those $200 million movies suck and are full of terrible CGI, so it won't be a huge loss to have fewer John Carters and Lone Rangers. Had the money gone to physical effects or locations other than green screens I'd be more concerned.

For me, my old compound eyes can't see 3D. So definitely, I don't want 3D.

3D is an attempt to charge more for everything along the chain, but has minimal to no value. Glad to see it has failed once again.

The Rift and other VR goggles will completely destroy this fake 3D , thankfully. Since they can do real 3D (once they can track Iris movements).. at least I hope so p,

If simple screens track your position and Iris movement they can potentially create fully realistic illusion of a 3D scene as well, not just goggles.

Hollywood will try again in 2040, I'm sure. After all, the fact that it's now failed twice won't deter them.

Good for them.

I don't mind watching the occassional 3D movie, but I can't imagine watching ALL my TV that way. Yech.
