PlanetSide 2 Battle Island Plans

A new trailer from PlanetSide 2 shows off content from an upcoming patch that will add Battle Islands to the MMOFPS. The clip shows off the vast interior and exterior environments of Nexus Battle Island along with some combat. According to the description, "Battle Islands is currently in development for Auraxis but will be integrated into the live game servers in preparation for esports." Here's more on the plan to offer focused 48x48 island combat:

Battle Islands are designed to emulate the PlanetSide 2 live game as closely as possible, but in a tighter space to encourage Outfit vs. Outfit competitive, close-quarters gameplay. Battle Islands will be integrated into the live game servers and will have a population cap. All gear, vehicles and features available in the open world of Auraxis will be available in the Battle Islands... just with fewer places to run or hide. Multiple win conditions will encourage both offensive and defensive tactics, so outfits will be challenged to come up with mixed-arms battle plans tailored for their opponents.

To help Outfits prepare, SOE is giving players a sneak peek at one of the islands, Nexus. A throwback to the original PlanetSide battle islands and themes, the Nexus battle island features an icy terrain, complete with ice caves, alpine forests, frozen canyons and ice fields.

As troops train for Battle Islands, they can also start preparations for upcoming updates to the Infiltrator class. The Infiltrator will now be deadlier and stealthier than ever with updates including a stalker cloak, motion sensor and recon drone. Decoy grenades will also help the Infiltrator to distract enemy troops.

Actually I'd say that the devs were average but have been showing improvement. The tank re-balancing succeeded. Then the recent Max re-balancing succeeded. Think their fast development pace caused some issues for the first couple months.

Drastic weapon stat changes have occurred here and there. Could see how that would upset some people.

They buffed tank and other vehicle armor. Air to ground rockets aren't much of a problem anymore.

The biggest failing of this game is that with no PvE*, the only thing to do is the thing that nets you the most XP...

*By that I mean server originated goals. ie. Instead of trying to get players to converge on a spot, offer bonuses for taking/holding/defending key installations. Let the squad leader nominate whether your force is aircav, frontline battle units, recon etc and have the game determine goals, with rewards/incentives, on the map all designed to funnel players towards each other.

This seemed to be a problem with classic planetside as well, where everyone zergs in a different place farming XP but very few actual huge battles occur.

On live they will be using these to connect the main (2,000-a-side) continents, so they are linked up in some strategic fashion.

Correction: The total population for continents is capped at 2,000. That makes 666 per faction.

I suspect the Battle Islands population cap works the same: about 250 total, all sides.

eSports is a joke and trying to bastardize this game into a half-baked Battlefield clone just seems like a mistake, they just didn't succeed in capturing the accessibility and gameplay of the first Planetside, which I rather liked.

They should have kept the scale of Planetside 1 and stayed true to other designs as well, I can't stand the bases in PS2.

These smaller maps are being designed for formally organised 48v48 "esports" (lols...) but will also be played as 250-a-side for the main live servers. On live they will be using these to connect the main (2,000-a-side) continents, so they are linked up in some strategic fashion.

The amount of development for this game post-release has been huge, though it has needed it.

Nah its gone the other way, it was difficult to fly at all for a while but they nerfed/de-buffed anti air a bit and its getting somewhere near balanced (albeit very difficult for a new pilot).

That put me off it for good among other things, and it was always the same 3 or 4 guys every time too. Im sure they where having a hell of a time though..
