Ships Ahoy - Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded is now available via digital distribution on places like GameStop PC Downloads and Steam. Here's word on the remake of the little perv's first appearance:

The first game in the series, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, was first published in 1987 and helped build the Sierra On-Line dynasty. Featured in a score of original software titles since then (not even counting numerous anthologies, repackagings, and cameo appearances), the series' namesake hero, Larry Laffer, is a bumbling, persistent everyman who just wants to be loved. Is that so wrong?

With the help of Al Lowe, Larry's progenitor and designer of all of Larry's classic adventures, Replay Games is remaking the landmark first game for an entire new generation (or two!). Expanded and enhanced in every detail and ready for both mobile devices and PCs, Larry is being reborn for the players who might've seen their parents (or grandparents!) playing Larry behind closed doors!

Although the games were marketed as "naughty," Al Lowe's Larry was comedic but never explicit, and the remake retains that standard. There's no full-frontal nudity, no four-letter words, and no on-screen sex. But we do have our comedic priorities: Larry is a story of a man on the make, and the game drips with innuendo, flirts with perversity, and oozes sexuality from every pixelated pore.

Well, space isn't really an issue, but 4 gig sounds a lot close to what I would have guessed than 8.

Just because storage is cheap isn't a reason to be lazy and not compress game assets. If that 4.35GB compresses down to 750MB, it wouldn't hurt to leave some of it compressed. I could live with a few seconds longer startup to save 3GB of disk space.

It won't be as magical to replay this, but i do encourage any 12-15 year old that is curious to know about adulthood, to play through all the Larry games (except for magna cum laude, that was a poor spinoff, don't touch that one).

Larry 1 through 6 for me, were the best adventure games I ever played on the Commodore Amiga, (then on the PC with a soundblaster), they will forever be remembered as the best personal interactive adult education a computer software could ever give you, as a young maturing boy.

Al Lowe and Sierra were genius to have created this back then, and I am happy they remade this, even if I don't get around to replaying it, it's still worth simply supporting and paying for this great title, that's how good it really is. it's an instant classic not to be missed for simply adding it to your game library.

Thx for the memories Al and team that brought Larry back in modern day programming. This does compute.

Sadly, this is a game whose time has passed. Sure, it definitely has nostalgia cred... but as a game, it is a marker of a bygone era. An era (at least in the US) where soft-core (and hard-core, for that matter) porn was available only in magazines you had to steal from your uncle and hide under the bed (and not instantly found on the net or cable), where risque meant Benny Hill (and not Chloe Sevegny blowing a guy in a "feature film"), and where, to a teenager, sex was mysterious and intriguing (and not introduced to kindergarteners in sex-ed classes with bananas and condoms). That was the time that LLL captured perfectly. Today, you'll just read some 13 year-old's "review" on the web that the game is terrible because there's no tits in the first five minutes and the whole game is ghey.

Isn't society sooooo much better today....?

Oh, and get off my lawn! Rifle

I guess we'll see what it does when I (eventually) kick it off. The number I was seeing was on the screen where you double click the name of the game in your list and you get the popup about "this game requires X amount of space, space available: Y". Is that where you saw 4 gig?

Bizarre...

Yeah that's where it was. I knew from the KS update that it wasn't going to be available on Steam, but when I put the key in it looked like it was going to let me install it. When I clicked finish, it only downloaded a few KB, and when I checked the steamapps dir to see what it downloaded, it was just some jpg file.

Then later just past noon it began downloading the whole game, I guess it saw it as an update. The Steam download was only 760MB, but after install it's 4.35GB.

Grabbed my code tonight from the KS - 8.7 gig on steam! Damn!

Something's wrong with that! I plugged in my Steam key this morning before it was available on Steam and it showed 4.3GB, but it wouldn't download. I grabbed DRM free download, which is only 750MB. Right after it was released at noon CDT, Steam began downloading it, and it only downloaded around 760MB. I just checked the directory in Steam and it is 4.35GB.

EDIT: Just out of curiosity extracted the DRM free installer and it is also 4.35GB. They could have kept some of the game files compressed to save disk space.

They gotta bring back part 7 or 8 it was. Love for Sail. I bought that at BJs(lol) as one of my first PC games I ever owned. Great times with that one as well. Then again, there are so damn many games I want them to bring back! lol, Sierra was AWESOME back in the 90s. Leisure Larry, Police Quest, King's Quest, Space Quest... Wasn't Quest for Glory and Gabriel's Knight Sierra as well?

It's also on GOG, might be worth a purchase when on sale.

So how graphic does it get? Wondering if developing it outside traditional channels made them a bit more bold?

the trailer on the web site shows that it has (CENSORED) over the naughty bits, just like the original.

They should have given this a graphic update.

I too played this at a far too young age and found it hilarious. Might take a look.

I found the diskette with this on it in my dad's secret drawer during my tween years in the early '90s. The game had a comedic age verification system that would take me a couple tries to get past. I thought the damn thing was so funny because the answers to the questions were usually something I had learned recently in history class. But, man, role playing as an adult was awesome. I couldn't wait to grow up so I could buy a gallon of wine at the mini mart for a $1, go play black jack at the casino, then sneak past the bouncer at the bar so I could sneak up stairs and have some naked fun with a girl. Don't forget your prophylactic, or your junk will catch fire!

Aaah, what great memories of this game. Watching my cousin play it back on DOS when I had zero knowledge of computers. I was like, wtf is this game? But it was awesome! lol... I'll definitely pick it up when it goes down to more my bargain bin price level, lol.
