Out of the Blue

Here's a thank you to Frans, who corrected the problem with our Twitter feed that I mentioned the other day, and we are now once again properly tweeting links to the stories here. An update to the new Twitter API was required, and a few other things got updated as well, so if you visited at some point and encountered last week's news, that would be the reason. There was also a flood of the older stories that were never tweeted during the problem, but I prevented a bunch of them from processing to avoid spamming everyone with a couple of hundred messages in a short time. Interestingly, a couple of the older posts that went through got re-tweeted, suggesting that preventing some of them from going through might mean some people weren't seeing them, but that horse is now out of the barn. Apologies for the inconvenience. #whoknewpeoplereadthosetweets

I dunno. It's the same Sony where whathsname said their PS3 launch price was just right, and people would work extra to earn money for it's cost.

That's true, forgot about that one. Let me change my statement to "maybe Sony finally learned its lesson."

Having said that, I am hoping their less than stellar financial performance the last few years (not the PS, but the company in general) will make them realize they really need to knock it out of the park this time, and that (to do that) they need to listen to their customers.

Also, slightly related: Mark Cerny has this serious Doctor Emmett Brown vibe that's really growing on me.

I'd say they were thinking Sony was going to do something similar.

I get what you're saying, and I feel the same way. I'm just trying to remind myself as much as anyone that this is still rootkit Sony. This is removal-of-OtherOS Sony. This is removal-of-backwards-compatibility Sony. They are pretty good at removing features/breaking promises/shady dealings.

Sony is a large corporation, same as MS, but there's never been that overwhelming sense of just sheer arrogance and bullheaded stubborness in Sony that there is in MS.

The rootkit thing was indefensible, though perpetrated by a different department within Sony. Removal of backward compatibility made sense, as it was really about the only thing that allowed them to bring the price of the PS3 down at the time. They were, in essence, putting an entire PS2 into the PS3 for BC, and not enough people seemed to want it for them to make it worth it.

The removal of other-OS they did out of (false) security concerns.

Not defending them, but I can see why they made the decisions they did with the PS3. I still can't fathom what the fuck MS was thinking with their initial bs announcement for the Xbone. An announcement they've now quickly backscrabbled from TWICE in about five weeks.

More than MS right now? Yes. Sony game us an option - I could (and still can) go totally digital, or I can keep buying discs. MS told us "this is how it's going to be". Fuck that, and fuck them.

Not to mention kinect being required. And the indies being screwed w/o a publisher. And a focus on being a TV appliance that happens to play games. And the $100 price difference.

Blood Vessels in the Eye Linked With IQ, Cognitive Function.

Individuals who had wider retinal venules showed evidence of general cognitive deficits, with lower scores on numerous measures of neurospsychological functioning, including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and executive function.

Why would WIDER retinal venules be linked to lower cognitive function? That suggests greater blood flow, so you'd think it would be the opposite: that smaller venules would have less blood flow and thus lower cognitive function. Not quite what I was expecting.

That falls under the "if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?" category of communication. I mean, of course the tree makes a sound, but since no one is around to hear it...it doesn't matter. Same with email these days. If you ignore that email today, and nobody saw you do it, does it matter? You can always come up with an excuse no one can refute later.

Contrast that with a twitter feed where one pointed question, rumor, etc that might have been ignored had it been in the privacy of an email box is now visible to everyone that follows that account. Not answering might look worse than answering. Everyone knows you saw it too, if only because you just got finished publicly answering questions you did want to answer.

If email is the tree in the forest, twitter is the car wreck in the middle of your commute. You simply can't ignore it, and others are going to slow down and stare too.
