Terraria Content Update Plans

In spite of an announcement back in February that post-release support for Terraria had concluded, this newsletter noted by PC Gamer has word that the developer is planning an unexpected version 1.2 patch they say will be "the biggest addition yet" to the sandbox game. Here's a bit:

Terrarians will encounter many new items, enemies, mechanics and challenges, to speak nothing of bosses and biomes. A lotís been confirmed so far. For builders, thereís furniture, materials (rainbow bricks and shadewood), design tiles and banners (and campfires). Combat enthusiasts can look forward to beam swords, cannons, Hammush (Legend of Maxx reference!), snowballs, shields and traps. All tinkerers can rejoice at accessories, active and inactive versions of every block and wire fixes and enhancements. Apparel has also changed: vanity-wise, expect Egyptian, Eskimo, fairy and steampunk outfits; whereas armor can now be dyed and has grown to include snow and cactus sets. Thereíll be different mobs and variations on old ones (non-mechanical bosses with unique AI; clown bombs wonít destroy tiles anymore) as well as appearing with health bars (with the suggestion that the on-screen reminders be toggled). Regarding mechanics: players will be able to automatically walk up half blocks and one block high tiles; PvP will be tweaked; and Hardmode will undergo changes, not just limited to the spread of corruption and hallow.

Aesthetic additions include a revamped character menu as well as rain clouds and normal clouds. Rain wonít be a major factor in lag creation since it will be a background effect; torches, then, being in the foreground, wonít be affected. World generation will also see the possibility of a giant tree, along with more flora and even stalactites. In the screenshot below, one of the first spoilers released to the community, we can see some of the new content, which Iíll speculate more on in a future article.

Interesting, but not surprising. It was his first major project, right?

I really wish they would release proper mod tools for this game. It's too bad the creator is a total dickhead and won't do it.

Did you kill the Wall of Flesh and redo the bosses?

Nice timing. I fired up Terraria the other day because I was bored. Way back when I started out, I was playing with a friend, but he decided he didn't like it after a couple of times playing. I haven't gotten very far in the game. I haven't even beaten the first boss, the Eye of Cthulhu. He showed up one before I quit playing and slaughtered me.

I think I have a crappy world and/or starting position. The corruption is just a bit to the right of where I started, and to my left is a large desert. On the other side of the desert is a castle where I got murdered by something when I entered it. If I go over the castle and continue going left I run into the ocean. I used a water walking potion and ran until it wore off and I don't think there is anything past it.

I have a mixed set of iron and silver armor, and gold tools. When I quit playing I remember I was trying to get to the other side of the corruption because I think I've pretty much mined every ore there is between the corruption and the castle. I have a grappling hook and the jumpy boots, so I thought I could just run and jump my way through it. That didn't work, I fell in a dark hole, I couldn't see and couldn't grab anything with the hook, so I went splat after a long ass fall (a seriously long fall, I think it was 30 seconds before I hit bottom).

The last thing I remember doing was trying to dig my way under the corruption. So when I started it the other day, that's what I did. I played for 4 hours and finally made it. I didn't bring any sunflowers to plant to stop the corruption, so I need to go back to get them. I made a little house, plopped a bed, set my spawn and stopped because I really didn't intend to play that long. This is one of those games where you think you're just going to play for a little while, and you just can't stop once you start.

Terraria is pretty cool, but after a couple weeks I reached the point where I don't know what else to do. I have the best items, a gigantic mega castle with all the NPCs living happily in their closets, dozens of bore holes to the bottom of the world, I killed the bosses, fucked around with liquid physics, and built a ladder to space. I feel like without more clear goals or an "endgame" there's no reason to return.

That's exactly what it is.

It's actually one better because they finally changed how walking works.. 1 "pixel" block height does no longer stop you (you auto climb it) this is the ONE primary issue why I didn't like Terraria and Minecraft, they have neat concepts, destroyed by stupid design decisions.
Nice

Agreed! I hate running with my hermes boots, only to hit that one block, get stopped, and have to wait to get them working again.

At the same time, it was really satisfying when you did a long sequence of jumping at just the right time. But I agree, it's better this way.

The video gives some good examples of some of the cooler stuff that's coming (and demonstrates running over 1 block height that eRe4s3r mentioned). But there's a lot more. Over 1000 items in the game at last count.

I never did go back and do all the "new" stuff in "hardmode" you get after defeating the Wall of Flesh. Maybe this will be enough to get me to go do that...

Okay, so can someone summarize what Starbound is? Terraria in space?

Creston

The basic idea is that it's a scaled up version of Terraria with a lot of procedural generation. You get a universe with up to, I believe 100 procedurally generated planets/moons. Each one is a particular "biome" with its own sub-biomes. So you'll have a lava world, or an ice world, or a weird tentacle world, forest world, etc. they haven't revealed all the biomes. You have a ship that you can customize and decorate in addition to whatever you build on planets.

A lot of the monsters are procedurally generated creatures, kinda like Spore. So you'll have a different set of enemies on each planet. Weapons are a mix of unique and procedurally generated, kinda like Borderlands.

Each planet has a difficulty level. This affects the difficulty of the monsters, and I believe also what kind of materials you can find there. So there's a progression to the planets.

Player characters can be male or female of one of a number of different species, and each species gets its own set of armor sprites, and some various other species-specific abilities. There's a research system where you can research new gadgets and abilities to improve your character beyond just your armor and weapon. Special attacks, that sort of thing.

It's much larger in scope than Terraria, and hard to explain everything. But that's the basics.

After "completing" the game twice, I have absolutely ZERO interest in replaying this. Regardless of new content. But it's a great game. Kinda like a 2D minecraft, but it's much more focused on combat and exploration rather than building. In fact, building SUCKS if you ask me.

Yea for a Minecraft type game the building never was all that great. I usually would build some simple stacked homes for the NPCs and my character and was done with it. Thankfully Starbound seems to have heavily revamped building making it both easier and more fluid.

I'll def play this update, but I'll be thinking 'Starbound' the whole time. Despite the feature creep, the game really is shaping up. Hope we see beta soon.

I cannot wait for this, it's about time the PC version got an update, and hopefully mod tools will be released.

I love Terraria and this should hold me over until Starbound is released.
