Trion Layoffs

IGN has word on layoffs at Defiance and RIFT developer Trion Worlds, having confirmed the cuts after initially reporting this as a rumor. Their original report stated as much as 80% of the company's staff was let go, but Trion says this is "exaggerated" (though no numbers are provided as a correction), and also says reports that employees were being escorted from buildings and that some executives would not be receiving severance are "100% false." Here's Trion's official statement:

To best position Trion in a rapidly changing industry, we have reorganized our teams and are expanding our free to play offering. With Defiance, we delivered a great game that more than one million gamers registered to play and continue to enjoy. As we progress from launch to ongoing development of the game, we are adjusting our staffing levels to deliver new content and improved features. RIFT, and our other titles in development, were unaffected by these changes. We are very much looking forward to the free to play release of RIFT and are excited by the other new titles currently in development.

Alright, this can't really be Cutter. He's always overcompensated for whatever sad little person he is IRL, but this is reaching parody levels. I wonder if Blue can check IPs to make sure nothing shady is going on here.

What?
No, it sounds just like Cutter. I actually think he's gotten less obnoxious over the years. Or, I should say, negative. For a while all he contributed was "this sucks!" or some variation.

Now he's more likely to follow it up with discussion and generally be entertaining and/or interesting, as well as his standard negative and arrogant.

Cutter used to post over on RPGCodex forums. He arrived here and brought his codex "everything sucks" persona with. He's a worm

The real reason Cutter thinks he's always right is that every time he is right, he points it out. Every time he is wrong, no one gives enough fucks to call him on it. Someone could literally go through his post history and list hundreds of times he was wrong, but he knows no one is going to waste that kind of time on him.

Plus, like you said, even a broken clock is right twice a day. If you say everything sucks and everything is going to fail in an industry wher e most things do suck, and most things do fail, you're hardly showing any kind of special insight. You're just making the safe bet.

So you're saying that Cutter is actually Michael Pachter's Blue's persona?

Wow... now that you mention it...

Yeah, and that's just really, really fucked up. There should be a class in college when you're going for your game design or game programming degree, that's basically called "This Industry Fucking Sucks."

Seeing EA and its ilk continuously just shit all over young, naive people just because they can is pretty aggravating.

Creston

The US is strongly anti-union and there is that constant stream of young naive people, so I don't think it will stop any time soon. Just about the only thing that has a chance at bringing sanity to their workplace conditions would be the rise of indie titles. Even then it would be a longshot because the indie developers tend to be fairly small teams and don't hire like the megapublishers.

well despite his egotism alot of stuff does suck in remarkably unbelievable ways. Just look at everything EA has touched in the last few years, or blizzard the two main players in the game. Anyone can hear the suck coming for miles and miles, cutter is just more in-tune with suck, than most.

Wrong.

If I'm virtually always right then the odds are actually pretty good that you're wrong. See how that works?

It's a nearly meaningless statement anyway. You're generally right about everything? So what do you mean by "generally"? More often that not? Like you're right 50.1% of the time? Yeah, so is generally/virtually everybody.

People at work say to me, "You're always right" but I disagree with them. Allowing others to think that or having that perception of yourself is dangerous. Know that you know nothing.

I don't know why I'm bothering to preach humility to Cutter though, prolific partier, banger of scores of women, survivor of 8 gram rocks, and a rockstar from Mars. Nothing wrong with those things of course but when you're reminding everyone all the time...

Just another example of movie (and now TV show?) licensed games all sucking. heck Game of Thrones had 2 epicly crappy failed games. Anyone still remember that game of thrones RTS game that was supposed to "completely blow us away with it's political depth" ? Hah....

Movie license games all suck. And when they don't then they are a miracle.

I've never really ever had that urge to "make games", like so many other gamers do (or claim they do.) If anything, I always figured that if I ever got the say over what kind of game to make, every programmer would quit in disgust over my absurd requirements and list of features that I had to have.

Even so, I could have had the largest hankering in the world to make games, and I'd never go work in the fucking gaming industry. I think the fry cooks at McDonalds get treated with more respect than the unfortunate souls who work in this industry. (a few companies like Valve and Egosoft excepted.)

Why they continue to let themselves be treated this way is baffling...

Creston

It is because there is a perpetual influx of young people who want to make games because they think it will be a fun job. The megapublishers can hire them and pay them peanuts.

The industry in general has an immense disrespect for the people who make the games and a disrespect for talent. It is a major reason why you have so many mediocre games. People with experience all quit because you can't have a family (or life) while working in the industry.

This industry has also become one of the most hostile industries to work with, which by itself is quite a feat. It's a shame that the devs take all this in stride and don't do nothing about the terrible treatment they get at the hand of publishers. The idea of a game devs union wouldn't be too bad considering the appalling work conditions.
