7 Days to Die Announced

Dallas-based indie developer The Fun Pimps Entertainment announce 7 Days to Die, a voxel-based sandbox game set in a post-apocalyptic environment with FPS, survival/horror, RPG and tower defense elements they say will offer a "unique combination of combat, crafting, exploration, and character growth." The 7 Days to Die website is online with more details and a gameplay trailer. Here's a feature list:

  • Explore a modern, beautiful, fully destroyable, fully buildable, fully dynamic, hand crafted, huge voxel world with cities, forests, wastelands, deserts, plains and mountains. Explore hundreds of points of interest and every building inside and out!
  • Our advanced “Dynamic Block Stability Physics System,” simulates real-time structural integrity. Build it right or watch it come crumbling down.
  • Relentless enemies will stop at nothing as they claw, jump and break their way through the world in order to get to you. And watch out for the unique severely mutated.
  • Mine and loot a multitude of items and ingredients to survive creating hundreds of weapons, items and traps with the intuitive and deep “Crafting System” inspired by classic adventure games but modernized. No wiki required!
  • Uncover the truth as you find survivor notes that lead to better loot from the “Dynamic Story Generation System” which puts the player in charge of the story solving the “now what problem” that plague most voxel games.
  • Play solo, Co-op online with friends or in our unique “Zombie Nomad Mode” for a no rules experience!
  • Enjoy a fully destroyable voxel-based world blowing up everything in the entire game or build it up bolstering the defenses of an existing structure or building your own fort to try and keep the zombies out.
  • Gain experience and upgrade your skills in melee, guns, crafting, and stealth!
  • Rummage and mine your way through the world finding food, water, loot and the resources you’ll need to survive and discover a purpose for everything in the world.
  • Build your own worlds and play them with your friends using the ‘Creative Mode Tools” featuring hundreds of block shapes and prefabs.

Yeah, doesn't sound like it's coming: http://www.horrorbid.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=280&t=22324

Such a shame. I think 28 Weeks Later is one of the best horror movies ever made.

Also, they blatantly tried to copy the 28 Day's later theme.
It came across as a mix of a few.

But that 28 Days Later theme is the BEST zombie theme EVER. It captures the hopelessness of the siutation perfectly IMO.

I had trouble getting past that. I'll keep an eye out for feedback from people who have played it. All this pre-alpha and beta stuff that's becoming trendy is becoming tedious

The graphics look like they couldn't decide whether to go full voxel or try their hand at realism.
The failed on both counts, and shoved them together as one. It truly looks horrendous.
Why not just go full voxel? Right now it looks ridiculous. Especially that shot of the realistic deer on top of a blocky hill.

Graphics aside, looks like the gameplay has some innovations, and hopefully it lives up to the claims.

Also, they blatantly tried to copy the 28 Day's later theme.

I disagree. I really like the look. It looks a bit rough though. Not cube rough, just pre-alpha rough.

Interesting, I'll keep an eye on it.

FYI there's a DayZ-themed Minecraft mod called MineZ for those of you who might be interested. I never got around to checking it out myself though, so no promises

I don't know why, but this is the only Minecraft clone that looks interesting to me.

Well they're using PayPal for their store, so if they screw you over you can reverse it pretty easily... Says right in the payment confirmation email, you are entitled to a refund in the case of non-delivery or the product being significantly different than what was advertised. This is interesting enough for me to toss $15 at them, and I look forward to playing the beta in July.

Maybe I am just too jaded after the cash grab fraud of The War Z, but I am getting a vaporware vibe from this. A project that comes out of nowhere, with a video that promises the world, and a "first 1000 buyers blah blah" deal? Very suspicious.

Looks neat but it seems really strange to me why they aren't using smooth voxels instead of the typical Minecraft bricks. For example of smooth voxels, take a look at Planet Explorers. Brick voxels are fine for buildings but in this gameplay video they are SUPER jarring when looking at them on terrain (0:33 seconds into the video), especially when the rest of the game looks like they're going for a realistic look instead of something retro.
Agreed.

Looks promising.
The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Looks good but can you go underground? Building an underground vault or hideaway would be cool and I'd think safer than staying above ground waiting for a herd to attack and bust into your hideout. Of course that depends... can the zombie or mutant AIs dig too? This might be worth checking out even if its just a better looking Minecraft meets DayZ.

They are gonna have to do some pretty insane AI tricks to keep this anywhere near interesting given that we can build "fully" (whatever that means)

Voxels are the fastest way to do "realistic" environmental damage with a 3D perspective. And it looks cool. Check out Voxelstein 3D.
