Honestly, I haven't played Hard Reset, so I wasn't commenting on its quality, so much as the argument that the design mores of modern FPSes are preferable to those of 15-20 years ago. Again, I'd a lot rather play Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, Half-Life, or Shogo, then anything that's come out since 2006 or so.

I bought Hard Reset after the accolades it received here, and finally installed it earlier this week, but man, you can't go back in some genres, vanilla FPS being chief among them.

I donno, I'd take a Doom-clone over a COD-clone any day of the week, let alone a late-90s, early-00's fps over what we have today. I used to adore shooters, but for me at least, COD totally ruined the genre. Honestly, the last shooter I truly loved was probably HL2, and the last multiplayer FPS was Quake Wars: Enemy Territory.

edit: I really liked L4D1 and 2, also. Since then though? Maybe it's just a result of getting heavily into flight sims, but there really hasn't been a shooter that's made an impact on me in over 3 years.

Tell that to Brutal Doom, which was more fun than any shooter I've played in YEARS.

After playing TF, Modern Warfare, and lately Natural Selection 2 CS just feels...odd now. Played a few rounds of CS:GO @ a friend's house and I cant get past how retro the gameplay is, and by 'retro' I dont mean in a good way. I was going to purchase it for nostalgia's sake but those few rounds convinced me otherwise.

If I have time I'll try CS:GO, but I'm with you.

Hard Reset sucks. Horrible level design absolutely rife with invisible walls (which are just half-closed gates, since you can't duck), terrible enemy design, terrible menus, awful presentation.
Some loved it because it was "old school," but it just feels like dated garbage.

Ah.. so it's like Gun Master mode in BF3 (Gun Master from CQ exp, 2 kills per weapon, new weapon every 2 kills, knife demotes you 1 full weapon (or 2 kills) down) last kill is a knife kill.

But yeah, as posted by someone else, the gameplay (OF CS:GO in general) feels way too arcade, floaty and old for my taste. Plays like HL DM, and that's not a compliment in 2013. As much as I loved old DM, nowadays I just expect more .. mhh I dunno, skill based precision, 3 shot bursts, proper bullet physics etc ;p

What is Gungame DM ?

GunGame is a mode in CS, CoD, BF and other games where you need to get a kill with every gun. There's a bunch of different rule variations on it too. My favorite though is GG DM Turbo. Deathmatch meaning you respawn right away and Turbo meaning you get your next gun immediately after getting a kill with the current gun. The server I linked goes Pistols, Shotguns, Subs, Rifles, Snipers, Nade, Snipers, Rifles, Subs, Shotguns, Pistols, Nade, Knife.

In CS GO, Valve created a new official mode called Arms Race which is basically the same as GG DM Turbo. There's another official mode called Demolition which is more like regular GG (no instant respawn, no instant weapon switch, and a bombing objective) but it has a limited set of weapons (8 I think).

It's been a while since I verified that I still suck beyond belief at Counterstrike - maybe I should give CS:GO a whirl and re-validate that.

That's a custom GG mod that's quite a bit different from the official version "Arms Race". You might be put off by the maps a bit though, most are converted from Source and are made for their layouts not their looks.

Same community runs two other GO GG servers and a bunch of Source ones too: https://www.dogzgaming.com/viewpage.php?page_id=2
