Out of the Blue

I'm having a little frustration with my mobile service, as I've learned some of the texts I'm sending don't go through and others are cut off. As far as I know this is isolated to texts sent to one other person, and poking around online suggests this may be because I'm sending from the Verizon network across to the AT&T network, though we are also caught in the brand war, as this involves an iPhone 5 talking to a Galaxy S4 S3. I've seen a lot of reports online about similar problems, but not much suggests how to solve this, and some seem to think it's an inevitable complication of translating across networks or carrier technology or something, but I thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone had any experience that might lead to a suggestion of how to work around this annoyance.

Wow, on a random whim I went looking for an update on this story:

Homesick dev Chloe Sagal successfully crowd-funds life-saving operation

Which I learned about here at Blue's and found this report of an alleged suicide attempt yesterday, here:

Report: ‘Homesick’ dev Chloe Sagal attempts suicide on Twitch.tv

Edit: Apparently on reddit also as an unconfirmed/developing story.

Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy is a shock. It's like wiping the grin off Mona Lisa's face. I understand her fear, though. Her mother died young because of breast cancer.
With the doctors saying 50-87% chance of developing breast cancer it seems like a good decision. But I'm sure, especially given the nature of our culture and her livelihood in it, that it wasn't an easy one. Best wishes to her, a hopefully a long life.

Texts are so 2006, use whatsapp!

Yeah, whatsapp, the ultimate spy tool. Compared to anything Google, Apple, Microsoft, or even the CIA does, whatsapp is like a t-rex next to a mouse. Take a look at all the rights and the power you give to them by installing their trojan app and IMMEDIATELY uninstall the app.

There's not a whole lot you can do about it. They pretend it's because of network translations but it's really not that difficult to translate a GSM network text to a CMDA2000 network.

They just deliberately drop like 0.7% of message to other networks and blame translations, in the hopes that you'll convince that friend on the other network to join their network.

Also, note that AT&T typically drops 5% of everything, whether it be calls, data connections or texts, no matter where it's going to / coming from.

tl;dr American Wireless companies! yay...!

Haha that NYC thing is good.

And spot-on. :)

Yeah, it really is!

And that eagle takes the fish AND the line AND the sinker, and almost gets the rod as well. Very funny.

Hey Blue,
Have you tried installing Google Voice on either/both phones and sending texts either to, from, or both to&from Google Voice? This might help.
Cheers

The Space Oddity thing was in yesterday's media links.

Dammit, I thought you had posted it and I actually searched for it but it didn't come up. Oh well in that case here is Bowie's favourite cover of the song for those who have never heard it - in fact the whole damn album is amazing....

Yea this kind of thing happens when you live on the leading edge of technology.

Been looking at the S4 and I might just have to get one. Tired of getting screwed over by Motorola and their year long wait for updates.

My guess -- Verizon and/or AT&T purposely trying to fuck over the other in some obscure way. The protocols for messaging are not that complicated...
