If anything all that reading and typing one is doing on the internet, often in 2 languages or more is likely more beneficial to the brain than most of any other thing you could do, and then there are games which, at least when it's RPG's, Simulations, or games where "thought" it is required, is training your brain for reflexes, speed and quick resolving of mental dilemmas. Heck how would you participate in a forum discussion if you couldn't pay attention to a 20 post long thread ^^ And that requires a lot more brain power than just "walking somewhere to get something" or even reading a book.

Why when he forgets what he wanted to get it couldn't have been all that important..... obviously not important enough for him to pay attention. Hardly a sign of "melting brains" and more a sign of "not paying attention to what you are doing" which is an issue of being overworked, stressed out, or generally not managing your life and time properly.

I am guessing he is married and has children...
