Valve Steampipe Conversions

The Team Fortress 2 blog has word that the Team Fortress 2 Steampipe conversion is complete, and the next time users log into the teamplay shooter their installation of the game will be converted, something that could be a lengthy process even on fast machines. They note that this is a one-time procedure, after which the game will operate and update more efficiently. This is a process all Valve's source engine games are undergoing, which will result in these games no longer sharing any code. For server operators, there is no automated conversion process, so the game will have to be reinstalled, but the good news is that server installations are now much smaller, as they no longer include textures and audio data. This FAQ has answers to burning questions about this and discusses known issues.

Is there a way to convert all games in one batch/queue like overnight when I don't need to use the computer?

Hmm, my I:\winstuff\steam\ uses about 33.333333333333333333... GB of disk space and have about 95 GB free on my old SATA HDD. I hope that's enough! It seems like only CS:S and TF2 need to be converted on my very old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine.

I'm almost tempted to delete Steam and only re-install what I'm currently playing. When I install a game I never delete it in case I want to go back and play it again. I've also installed quite a bit that I intended to play, but haven't played at all yet. My Steam directory is almost 400GB, and I'm getting lower on disk space every day. I know I could clean out a couple of hundred gigs elsewhere though when it comes to the point when I really need it.
If you do, make sure to use this:

It can backup saves.

I haven't played TF2 in a while, but I launched it and let it update this morning. Then I checked each Source game, and there were a couple of others that needed the conversion. Check your steam/steamapps/<USERNAME> directory because after the conversions, it didn't remove the files from there like it said it would. It did copy/install the files to the common directory, but it left several gigs of stuff in the username directory.

I think the reason they separated the code bases is because when ever they made a engine change it affected all the games on that particular version.

Wait, does not share code means I have to install 5 versions of the 8 gigs of textures and stuff thats currently shared between all source games? Will I see my hdd space balloon from that?

Like:
1gb source 2007 shared materials.gcf
1gb source materials.gcf
1gb source sounds.gcf

etc

And you can finally install TF2 into "not default" location..So I can install it on my 2TB D:\ drive where all the games go, and not on my tiny 128GB C:\ SSD where Steam itself is.

which will result in these games no longer sharing any code.

Thank goodness. Anytime there is a TF2 update, it breaks DoD Source.

If nothing else it's worth it for the massively improved load times for the Linux version of TF2. It went from taking roughly 3-4 minutes to have the game ready to actually load the server browser, to taking under a minute. It seems like map changes go much quicker now as well.

Not sure about the Windows version, I've only played it on Linux since it came out.

Ah! Fair enough.

While it seems odd that they wouldn't want to 'share code', each engine is limited in the directions each can take.

Yes, because many of these games were "Mods" for the "Half-life" game.
