Here's the announcement:

Santa Monica, CA - May 1, 2013 - Prepare for the next generation of Call of Duty®. The franchise that has defined a generation of gaming is set to raise the bar once again with the all-new Call of Duty®: Ghosts. Published by Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI), and developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the original Call of Duty and the seminal Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® series, Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise. The new title delivers a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast of characters, all powered by a new, next generation Call of Duty engine that redefines the series for the next generation.

Infinity Ward is going all-in to create the next generation of Call of Duty worthy of the world's greatest fans."

"Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we're not resting on our laurels," said Mark Rubin, executive producer of developer Infinity Ward. "We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we're building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can't wait to share them with our community."

"With Call of Duty: Ghosts, we have no doubt that our longtime partners, Activision and Infinity Ward, will raise the bar higher than ever before for this incredible franchise."

Starting today, fans can begin pre-ordering their copy of Call of Duty: Ghosts at retail outlets worldwide.

"There's no other video game property like Call of Duty. It's the biggest game franchise on the planet that has had some of the biggest game entertainment launches in history," said Tony Bartel, president of GameStop. "We are very excited for the launch of Call of Duty: Ghosts, as we transition to next generation consoles."

Erm...I didnt get anything from that trailer...So can we play CoD as a gay spartan warrior now? Or a samurai? How does that work? Until they show some gameplay all Im getting is a kind of Village People vibe from this one which is fucking weird...

My guess? It's honoring warriors that died, as the game will honor Ghost, a warrior that died.

Again, the only thing this series has going for it, character-wise, was a guy in a skull balaklava. And they stupidly killed him. So this game will be people honoring him. Makes sense, I guess. From what little I could discern of the convoluted, poorly presented storyline, the guys in the MW series were operating outside the law and damn near mercenaries in MW4, because they'd been disavowed by the government, like a less interesting A-Team. So, in this one, they'll just fully go from "like a less interesting A-Team" to "entirely a less interesting A-Team," only with cooler masks.

Yet another clone to pollute the market, it's time to move on Infinity Ward, this horse has died long time ago, no marketing magic can resurrect it with it's former glory.
As long as people buy it, companies will keep on making it.
It will be dead when they won't sell any, and looking at sales figures we are far away from that.

Much like the rhythm genre it will be milked until it is a lifeless husk.

No, instead you're making the same game but calling it Ghosts. Wow, way to go out on a limb there, Infinity Ward. You guys have become the fucking Taco Bell of the game industry.

Isn't Infinity Ward just 'Ghosts' now anyway? Is anyone there still that worked on say COD1?

Good point. Probably a few guys here and there, but the heart and soul is definitely long gone.

..."and there are those" games that are the SOS with masks.

Spin it as a new flavor with a new engine, but most likely the same belabored SOS all over again. But hopefully I'm wrong.

I think the word "ghosts" is the only unique language that separates this press release from the last three CODs' releases.

Do they have a positive cliche generator? Lets at least get some synonyms working in here next time guys. Ctrl F for "new" says they say it 13 times, at it loses its luster each time.

Hoping for: COD crossed with Ghostbusters.

What we'll get: COD with occasional stealth element tacked on.

He's being truthful, I don't know why you're complaining. The name is the riskiest thing they've changed in this iteration.

If it has Call of Duty in the name, the kiddies will buy it.

I don't know how you can be the next generation when it's still being made for the last gen systems. I'm sorry but no matter how much you improve the engine, you'll still be bound by the systems. If they really wanted to take a chance and go for it they would only make it for PC/PS4/next xbox.

The best thing that could happen in this regard is that they used some common sense and put all their effort into the PS4/Nextbox/PC versions, with PS3/360 being the afterthought ports. The fact that they're promoting this with the reveal of the new console gives me a glimmer of that hope. Otherwise, I'm not really expecting much of anything new.

But we're not resting on our laurels," said Mark Rubin, "which is why we've decided to eschew the Modern Warfare 4 title entirely for this next rehash! We think it's a huge risk we're taking -- after all, how will customers easily find the same old game with a new name when they're looking for it at Walmart?"
