and awesome practical effects.

Those are sorely missing these days. People like Rick Baker and Stan Winston really did amazing work for their time. And now it's almost completely done by computer (I know the latest evil dead was crowing about not using any CGI, but outside of it?).

I like The Thang a lot but its far from his best. Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York, Starman, et al. And my personal fave...Big Trouble in Little China.

If you're looking for something to watch this weekend, John Carpenter's The Thing is on Netflix Streaming if you have it. It's probably his best movie, and totally holds up. Great atmosphere, great tension, great acting, and awesome practical effects.
