Dark Souls PC "Half-Assed" - PC Prioritized for Sequel

Dark Souls director Yui Tanimura speaks frankly about the shortcomings of the PC port of From Software's action/RPG in a story on Shacknews, admitting this was not a high enough priority. He says they are working on doing better with the sequel in comments translated by someone whose knowledge of English idiom is not half-assed: "A lot of it was not very well done, sort of half-assed," Tanimura says via translator Tak Miyazoe. "Yes, we will definitely put more priority on the PC. Last time, we started working on PC after the console version was complete. This time, because we are considering the PC from the beginning, you can be sure there will be more care put into PC development." There's also a translated Q&A on Destructoid where Tanimura tells them the game has sold more than 2.3 million units.

A glorified beat 'em up. I'm not sure if that should be a bad thing.

Anyway Dark Souls reminds me of Severance allot. The environments, the "tankish" feel of the character, and the slow battles where one mistake can drop you... even the storytelling!

Dark Souls is the Severance of "today", it just didn't get the melee combat as right as the older Severance.

Seriously, anyone who hasn't played it yet should give it a shot. The melee combat is simply the best I've ever experienced.

PS: Play as Sargon, the Knight. He'll eventually gets the best combos and the game feels best balanced with him.

I remember playing that like 8 (ish) years ago, fun but felt like a glorified beat em up. Dark Souls gameplay owns it

OK so I tried the game again, now with the mods.

I still didn't like it and I want everybody that did (somewhat) like the game take the next game recommendation seriously:

Severance: Blade of Darkness

The game is rather old but the first game with the dynamic shadows and dismemberments as we know them today + the BEST MELEE COMBAT I've ever experienced in a game to this day. It's very similar to Dark Soul's but better. Just better.

Give it a shot. Friends of mine and myself still play the game occasionally. I think I've finished it about 8 times with the Knight, 6 times with the Barbarian, 5 times with the Dwarf and once with the Amazon. It's fucking amazing. It still is. Throwing decapitated heads at unaware enemies or fighting a zombie with it's own dismembered arm never gets old either.

I literally couldn't make sense of what you were trying to say, it wasn't a 'dig', it was just the honest truth. You yourself called it a monologue even. There's no 'flow', people have their own opinions, I don't take my cues from anyone. People berated Darks because he was acting like a baby. Ports aren't all made the same, people trash one and excuse another based on the gameplay, state of the port and many other factors. Judging all games based on the same criteria is something a game reviewer might try (and fail) to do but this is just a bunch of users.

I'll give it another whirl, but I doubt the combat will be better than that in Severance: Blade of Darkness. Man, that's by far the best melee combat a game has to offer!

Thanks for enlightening me that you're one of those people. I'll try to remind myself not to talk to you.

As for the other people... the graphics were horrible, yeah, and that's without checking the mod that fixes the resolution. My cousin and a friend looked over my shoulder when I tried the game and they were thoroughly disgusted by it. The first impression of the half-assed port is fucking horrendous, obviously to many a person's opinion.

I'll give the game another whirl with the mentioned mods. BUT -- and this is my gripe here a little -- there's been countless of games out there that weren't even remotely as broken as this game at launch and yet got one whole lot of thrashing in this community, with people exclaiming how a released game shouldn't need tinkering.

But I guess there's this... flow, if you will.. going around here. I guess the vote for this game and its developers is to be tolerant. Whatever. I don't get it, but that's fine.

I don't think that anyone here is really denying that the game was quite a bad PC port and that it's a damn shame that there needed to be mods to run the game in the first place. But I think what most of us are saying is that even though it's a bad port that requires multiple mods to be playable, it's good gameplay and great combat system still shines through and that the game's very playable with a gamepad OR with a keyboard and mouse if you're willing to download some 3rd party mods.

If you're on the fence, wait till GMG has one of it's voucher deals and give it a try if you're interested in a unique third-person hack-and-slash RPG with a fantastic combat system. Or wait for the Dark Souls 2 PC port reviews and hope that the devs are honestly going to try to make a good port this time around.

Yeah I tend to agree with you Optic, it takes all of 10 seconds to install the .dll file mods required to do. If anything it's much faster than modding something like Skyrim or etc which arguably has as many out of the box deficiencies (though non-technical). There's a few people being drama queens about the port here, it was a bad port but it was not unplayable by any means and the fixes were readily available at launch and easily implemented.

I'm curious if those of you who are harping on the Dark Souls PC port have used both dsfix (resolution and framerate unlocking) as well as dsmfix (smoother mouse control and being able to rebind mouse keys)?

Yes, it does suck that the PC port practically REQUIRES those two mods if you want to play it on the PC with a keyboard and mouse and that it wasn't released like this from the start, but as PC gamers, most of you should know that this isn't exactly uncharted territory.

I didn't buy the PC port at first because the devs were upfront about the port being bare-bones and reading all of those issues that cropped up when the game was released made me put the game on my "do not buy" list. Then a bunch of my friends started constantly playing the game on Steam and when dsfix and dsmfix came out, that seemed to help solve a bunch of the complaints that they were having with the port. After that, I honestly "sampled" the game to see if I could deal with the port and to see if these supposed fixes actually made it playable. After the initial trial and error with finding keybinds that fitted my control scheme, I soon realized that I was playing the game for hours and not having issues with the mouse control. The game was a fucking blast.

Load up GreenManGaming, find the latest 20% coupon, and the rest was history.

I think that those of you who are saying that the PC port is "unplayable" are over-dramatizing it a bit too much, given all the well-known fixes that are released by the community. The fact that the devs said that they're planning on not half-assing the DS2 port makes me happy and hopefully any remaining issues will be worked on by the PC community like they did for the DS1 port.

You are forgetting that those "horrible" graphics are directly brought from the consoles and that the only true platform that shows the work these graphics artists put into their world is the PC with dsfix installed.

The amount of detail they put into the world that is lost in the muddy graphics of PS3/Xbox360 is actually very sad - I could never play another Souls game on consoles after seeing the transition that dsfix brought to the game.

I want to make sure we are all on the same page here, if you have not installed dsfix and are commenting on the games graphics - please stop and click here for simple comparison shots.

Could not make any sense of that except for this part:

I don't care whether or not you loved the game and I don't know how Darks feels about that. What I do find disdainful is a person's incapability to understand where someone else is coming from in cases like these.

Like some idiot yelling at everyone else and not seeing it from their perspective? Funny how we're supposed to be patient with a screaming little baby but he doesn't have to see it from our perspective at all. Fuck that.

I don't even know what an "extremist pc gamer" means and when you qualify for one. I do, however, love and play PC games only.. and for the reason of [mostly] their playability -- the gameplay. The freedom of M/KB and to adjust the settings to your own liking. To me.. the game felt sluggish and horrible with M/KB and the graphics were just horrible. I'm not an "extremist pc gamer" in the sense that I don't feel like tinkering around files myself to improve a game I've paid hard-earned cash for. I do that too, for games like Skyrim that are solid and playable from the beginning but only get better with said tinkering.

I don't care whether or not you loved the game and I don't know how Darks feels about that. What I do find disdainful is a person's incapability to understand where someone else is coming from in cases like these. For example... I fcking LOVE & ADORE Alpha Protocol while many people think the game sucks for countless of reasons. I understand completely what their gripe is with the game: the graphics suck, the gameplay kinda sucked etc. I just think the story ruled and the decision/consequence feature was better than any other game out there. But.. I understand why people think the game sucks and I even agree with most of their points. See the diff?

Anyway.. There's people that aren't the strongest at expressing themselves online. I'm one of them. I sooner think "fuck this shit!" Then "Alright, lets have a discussion about this.". This is the complete mirror image of who I am in person. But fuck me am I good at antagonizing myself online. And so is Darks.. I guess.

Anyway that's that for my monologue....

I wonder how many people are just repeating things they've heard, I played and beat it with a keyboard and mouse. I see a lot of ignorance from the peanut gallery, comments that indicate they didn't even play the game. It was not unplayable and the user interface is nonexistent in both versions, it was a design choice. I didn't even have to go crazy with mods or anything. I made a few small edits to a file myself like I've been doing with PC games for over twenty years. If that's too much to ask of people in these days of auto-patching and convenience then stop calling yourself an 'extremist pc gamer'. A PC gamer who whines about such a small thing might as well be a console gamer to me.

This game didn't crash, its multiplayer was stable and all of the features functioned as advertised. There have been better ports and there have been worse ports. Carrying on like a fucking baby about other people using controllers and buying it is just retarded. Go work for me 8 hours a day then you can make the purchase decisions in this household.

Scanned the topic.. there's a war going on between Darks and the rest huh? I can see where he's coming from. Dark Souls is a terrible, terrible port. I think his anger and frustration comes from the fact that the community that normally manages to moan like used up crackwhores about right about anything, somehow don't wanna agree to an almost factual point that the game indeed sucks ASS as a port: It's unplayable without a joystick (which is kinda unforgiving, being a fucking PORT to PC these days) and the mod that fixes the resolution.. plus the user interface hasn't even been touched.

Hell yes I understand his frustration and how he's antagonizing himself as a result.

I hope they do a better job on the port. But I think it's a bit much to expect this style of game to play well with kb/m. I play pc not because I expect kb/m for every game. I play pc because pc has all of the options available. You guys do realize that pcs have had controllers for about as long as they have had games. They have had joysticks and other input devices.

I expect a pc game to have kb/m support because that is the standard interface you can expect your audience to have. But some games - console port or not - I expect to play better on a controller.

I hope they do better for the next game (I mean sure, the game should be winnable by the controls you have available, or you may as well just have a big warning on the box that the game needs an attachment), but unless the kb/m controls are really amazing I will probably play with my controller. But defining me as a console player because I prefer to use a controller where appropriate is really stupid, and ignores the rich history of interface experimentation that pcs have enjoyed.

OTOH, the switch from directinput to xinput was a travesty.
