Aliens Colonial Marines Patch Patched

The Gearbox Software Forums have a thread about the new update that went live yesterday for Aliens Colonial Marines, eventually reporting it was fixed to sort out the user complaints the new version generated. In spite of the patch notes containing only two entries ("Added toggle for film grain filter" and "Increased security to address cheats and exploits"), the patch caused problems for many users, including missing downloadable content and an inability to use legitimate ini tweaks, attributed to the anti-cheating changes. This lead to Gearbox pulling it from Steam entirely, saying: "The update will be temporarily removed from Steam while the team investigates the corrupt DLC error and works to resolve that. More details as I have it." This is followed by a wee hours update saying a new version of the update was rolling out, and the subsequent posts indicate this has solved the reported problems. Thanks Guille.

Somehow, I missed that any DLC was released... just checked Steam... $15 for 3 multiplayer maps???

And the game is still $50 (not on sale).

So, if all they are going to do is release a few multi-player maps here and there befoe their contract is up... I'm sure they'll get done. A good singular level-editor hobbyist could probably do a decent map, every couple of weeks. So having "alleged" a professional developer, or a few, ...crapping out maps to meet DLC contracts shouldn't be a problem.

...And probably some of those maps were cut from the game, and are being polished for re-introduction.

They let rebellion take another stab at it, many considered AvP from 1999 to be the best one ever made, the 2010 version was an epic fail.

In Rebellion's defense (even though AvP3 was absolute dog shit and there's no excuse) Sega gave them 9 months to redo the game from the initial AvP: Requiem movie tie-in originally developed before the license changed hands. Sega is a company run by out of touch fools and Randy Pitchford is a huge fraud I have been warning people about for years. Borderlands is just a fluke and even that is something they ripped off from a better designer.

I still don`t get wtf Sega doesn`t allow a dev Team with a proven track record for AAA+ titles to do an Aliens type game. Nope, they had to go with Randy "Snideley whiplash" Pitchford and his Band of Cronies.

I wouldn't have expected Gearbox to put out such a bad game - Randy did a hell of a job convincing us and probably SEGA that they knew what they were doing. You can't deny the e3 demo looked cool as hell, plenty of experience with the unreal engine and much trumped up tweaks for dynamic lighting etc. It all turned out to be a bag of lies.

They let rebellion take another stab at it, many considered AvP from 1999 to be the best one ever made, the 2010 version was an epic fail.

Next up is Creative Assembly who is rumored to be making an Alien game for consoles allegedly using Dead Space as a jump off point in terms of game design - 3rd person, slower paced etc.

Yes. They are contractually obligated to support this mess through August. That is when the agreed upon patch and DLC window closes and Sega moves on for good. Although don't be surprised if they find a way to renegotiate and cancel at least 2 of the promised 4 DLC packs. Going by the nonexistent player-count the game is dead already. The first DLC didn't sell at all and they aren't bothering with advertisements. However it won't literally be dead for a few more months.

I'm sure they aren't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. Cancelling the Wii U version should have made this much obvious. They are patching the game because they still have 3 DLC packs to release. I doubt they've broken even on the base game so this DLC is their last hope. I also suppose they have an obligation to release that for the fools, err i mean folks, that bought the season pass. But besides all ten of those poor souls, nobody is going to buy that DLC they spent money to complete if they don't even at least give the impression that they addressed some of the 'concerns' reviewers have had with the game.

What's really sad is that the Aliens RPG looked really neat and it got canned in favor of this turd.

"So they're still supporting the game for those that bought it
That's actually pretty decent of them."

They are giving lip service support under contract duress. They released a what? 4 gig patch that ultimately added Alien end boss unbalanced A.I., and a Film grain eye condom patch.... with some pretty wacked out lighting tweaks.

And then 3 weeks later, now a film Grain toggle that should have been there in the 1st 4 gig update patch. WTF are the high rez assets, A.I. animations and paythfinding tweaks???

The last time I saw a game bent over so bad by its dev team, was Men Of Valor. But I gotta say, the treatment allround given to A CMs is unprecidented.

What a terrible engine, and terrible team of devs.

Bring back the quake engine, and the original id software team.

It's nice that they provided a film grain toggle since prior to this it was as if you were playing the game on a cctv,

Any dev that still thinks that "film grain" is acceptable to use in games should have his fucking hands chopped off. Every single time it's been used, it has looked terrible and the dev wound up having to patch it out or put a toggle in place, and I'd reckon that 99.99999999999% of people turn that shit off.

Film grain is fine on low res, shitty movie screens. It is most definitely NOT fine on extremely detailed resolutions that are used in games.

So nice to see them listen to the two people who played and complained about this game. I'm sure Darrell and Chris appreciate having their purchase patched.

I'd still only recommend it as a $5 - $10 steam sale purchase though.

Hey! How'd you know exactly what I was going to do?

Proof? I saw a video on YouTube it looked the same... not sure if it was a joke or not...

The last big patch they pushed brought the game to look a little more like the E3 demo they showcased as well as more aggressive and intelligent AI. It's nice that they provided a film grain toggle since prior to this it was as if you were playing the game on a cctv,

I'd still only recommend it as a $5 - $10 steam sale purchase though.

If gearbox was the type of company to just shove failed releases under the bed and forget about them, id never buy from them again.

Im glad that they are trying to patch the game, even though I dont own it. It means despite something that was a shameful failure, they are trying to take responsibility for it by fixing it, and most importantly, arent saying "Screw you guys" to those people who actually bought it.

Means that in the future, I know if I buy a gearbox game, and it not a major success, and has issues, that they will still try to improve it and fix things.

Yeah... I'd need to see side by side uncompressed video comparisons, in at least 720p.

Especially fixes for the hoakey alien animations, and the AI not getting stuck on objects or doors.

I might pick it up at a drastically reduced price, then, mainly because I do like the Alien setting. But from what I saw was released... they have a shitload of work to do, and I can't imagine the few patches that they have had, has gotten it up to "bargain bin" status, yet.
