Sony apparently walked that language back after the fact, I think they will just let publishers do their own thing.

If you are into MP xbox is probably a better choice then.

There are pros and cons for both company, but for the next gen consoles if the Microsoft rumors are true Sony does look like a much better choice already.

Sony had the same exact rumors, though.
I'll react to them when they're confirmed as true or untrue for either, meaning when the device is released. Even then, I wouldn't be surprised for a company like Sony or Microsoft to update the device for some of this crap at a later date.
I think Sony specifically said on the press release that their console will be able to play used games, where is Microsoft wants to move to the all digital download platform ie PC games. I agree with you though, we'll have to wait and see what happens when these consoles come out, and even then they can patch it and change the way they behave completely.

My point was that Microsoft is just as bad as Sony so I do not see one company being any better then the other. For example hard drive swap in PS3 vs Xbox360.
It is like a choice between EA or Activision.
I am personally happy to be a PC gamer and be able to play gems like Kerbal Space Program.

The only Sony issue I think of as significant on your list is PSN being hacked. Everything else I wasn't really affected by. My Sony MP3 players play MP3s. My Sony ereaders are great, are non-proprietary and the touch screens work well.

Never bought a Vita (due to proprietary storage - Sony's loss). Never thought UMD was a good idea (again proprietary which I avoid like Apple products).

No idea on the rest of those things or what they are. There's plenty of obscure things you could add to the microsoft list such as GFWL, Zune etc.

Dude, stop. Microsoft has done dumb things. Sony has done dumb things. Sony has more of a history of doing really dumb things, because it's only had one winning device in the past decade or so (Playstation.) But, as a whole, they have both done stupid things.

Not only are you the one trying to say it's fair to call one stupid but not the other (the argument easily goes either way) but now you're doing the "this one sucks because of all the things that effect me, and while the other one also sucks I haven't paid much attention, I mean, they may have screwed over everyone else but they were always a good dude to me, so they're cool!"

Just admit Sony sucks, too.

The argument however is the intelligence of Sony vs that of Microsoft, not whether Sony is all that smart.

Microsoft:
Windows 8
The ribbon
Always on console DRM
No used games for Xbox 720
Xbox Ads Live
Red Ring Of Death Xbox 360s
etc.

Sony's going to have to do something really bad to be worse than Microsoft.

Sony:
"Our console is a steak"
"People will forgo food for our console"
"Emotion engine"
Proprietary storage / memorystick
UMD
PSN Hacked
Playstation phone
Proprietary eReader format with glossy touchscreens
Sony Dash
Qualia
MP3 players that didn't play MP3s

Sony already looks pretty bad.

I believe Sony is smarter than that. They've already indicated that used games are fine on PS4. Sony will easily win this console generation if they stay away from MS mistakes.

Name 1 thing Sony has done in the last, I dunno, decade, that indicates they're smart.

Sony is probably the single most bumbling tech company out there. There's a reason why they keep cycling management. Yeah, their appeal to indies right now is high, but that's less because they're doing anything smart and more because they weren't doing anything at all.

But their TVs are failing, their music devices are failing, their phones are failing, all because they never really do anything anyone would call "smart."

Yup, I'd expect the monthly-payment-subsidized version, too. Not just XBL subsidized. That would actually be good for someone like me, as I will get XBL. It'll be just a subsidized. $200 down, $10 per month on top of XBL.

For $500 the Xbox needs to do something new. Every console since the NES has done something new:
1) SNES. Drastically improved graphics, tripled the number of buttons, all allowing for much more intricate games
2) N64/PS. 3D, again, allowing for more intricate games
3) GC/Xbox/PS2. Dual analog sticks, making 3D games more playable
4) 360/PS3. Big jump in RAM, plus online connectivity, allowing for huge hits like Oblivion or COD4

Not sure what will happen next. We already have enough RAM for huge worlds - yeah, it could be better but the development costs become unreasonable. I don't see them fixing most of the online issues because, often, they're design choices.
Of course more power and more RAM will make games more interesting, but more expensive to develop, and will they really be $500 more interesting?

Im not sure how more ram equates to games being more expensive. If you are talking about HR costs, 3d artists always work with High Poly models, texture artists always do max quality versions first, so the manhours are the same. Shit is usually scaled down afterwards because of RAM/performance limitations. If anything working with more ram/power is a boom to most game designers/developers/programmers whatever, because it makes everything easier, not more difficult.

They don't "always" work high poly, but yeah, a few of us had this argument a ways back and I had to explain that it's almost always high poly and cut back.

However, this is for models, not worlds.

Plus, use some common sense. Think back to the Doom days. 1 man could create a level in hours. Sure, not a good level, but still a level. It was just walls with 1 texture and a few props here and there. A level now? It takes weeks for multiple men to do. Walls are no longer just a flat polygon with 1 texture. You no longer have a candelabra or 3 in a room. Rooms need to look like something. Desks or bookshelves or whatever. Then, in the case of a game like Skyrim, things go on top of those, and paintbrushes get put everwhere.

Whereas in the days of Doom someone could do a level in a day (not a good playing level, but one that looked fine), you now have artists spending far more than that on just a room.

As RAM goes up, the demand for better graphics goes up. This isn't just polygons, it's details.
Plus, while it's true that the poly artists likely work high poly, the animators don't. The particle effect guys don't. Now they need to start matching the poly counts. Animations will start taking longer to do. Textures? Probably also high quality to begin with.

Really, saying "oh, you can increase graphics with no increase in time because 1 type of graphical artist works high poly already" ignores that the guy making the meshes is 1 part of a team full of guys doing all different things.

Yes I agree and see how that makes sense in a complex open sandbox world game where you take it to the max. However most games dont fall into that category.

There is only so much you need to do with an on-rails-shooter for example. Not everyone makes GTA or Skyrim, and when they do they usually set the budget in advance. Or at least I would hope that in the beginning of the creative process thats what they would do because anything else is crazy. Although now that I think about it with EA or Activision at least, I guess most of their games go overbudget.

Did any one forget how expensive the 360 and ps3 were at launch. I remember seeing The xbox 360 going for around $400-450 for the base models with a hdd before the arcade or slim models were a thing. The PS3 at launch were hovering around $500/$600 depending on the model you decided.

It is going to be a while before they can get the price to the $299 sweet spot of the current consoles. I would imagine they are going to be a loss leader bit of hardware again until somewhere in the middle of the new generation.

Absolutely, unless Ballmer really likes it, then it might stay in his personal collection Or if you have non-indie music playing in the background, then the copyright will protect your privacy.

ROFL!

That's not really a joke
I am sure they would not use it for anything evil.
It would be used to analyze how many calories are in your popcorn, or beer, you body fat ratio calculations etc etc, and Kinect would display that data while you are watching the movie.
Kinect would also be able to display advertisement based on your product usage in your home.
The future is awesome!

...and look at that. The first picture I see on that website is the reason I no longer use my 360 and won't buy a next-gen Xbox: Lady Gaga; pop culture.

Microsoft wants the Xbox to be a MULTIMEDIA device and that's fine but they give you no way to choose what shows up on the dashboard. I don't watch MTV because I'm too old for their crap and I don't want to see it on my gaming device. I want a pure gaming experience. I don't want to know what new music video or TV show is downloadable; I want to see VIDEO GAMES.

Also, I keep thinking that Lady Gaga is Marilyn Manson. They should really get together and do something.
