Distant Worlds Expansion Announced

Matrix Games announces Distant Worlds: Shadows, an upcoming third expansion for Distant Worlds to add a new "Age of Shadows" to the 4X space strategy game. Here's word on the add-on, which requires the two previous expansions as well as the base game:

Distant Worlds: Shadows adds new gameplay to the Distant Worlds universe and is set in a new era in the Distant Worlds timeline, called the Age of Shadows.

In this time, when the planetary civilizations have not yet rediscovered hyperspace travel, factions of space-based pirates with remnants of ancient technologies battle each other to succeed in survival and expansion. They struggle to hold back the rebirth of the space empires from the ashes of the first war against the Shakturi while establishing themselves as the new power in the galaxy. It is up to the player to choose a side.

New gameplay includes expanded ground combat, with a full new ground combat tech tree, a ground combat resolution screen and multiple different troop types as well as ship and base boarding and capture. The expanded tech tree also includes Gravitic Weapons and Tractor Beams as well as additional planetary facilities that allow you more customization on character recruitment.

Distant Worlds: Shadows also includes an updated and improved graphical engine, a much enhanced AI and comprehensive difficulty settings that will be challenging even for the veterans of the series and as usual many new modding possibilities.

I'm into 4X games, but had never heard of this one before. From reading the comments, I see why. They set themselves up as niche and have worked hard to stay that way.

If you want my sale, put yourself out there and offer a discount. There's too much competition out there otherwise. But if the price is low enough, I end up buying them all.

I'll also say that I have gotten my money's worth out of Distant Worlds, even though I haven't played it in over a year. Even though it cost me about $70 with various discounts, I definitely got at least 200 hours out of it, which is a much better hour-to-dollar ratio than many modern games.

I want to like Stardrive as much, but it's still missing a special something. The race customization options and the tech tree currently need more variety, and ship design isn't too interesting yet. The AI doesn't do interesting things yet, either. I recently played MOO2 after playing Stardrive and I still enjoyed MOO2 more. Of course, Stardrive only cost me $15 for the Kickstarter and I've already played about 30 hours, so it had a good hour-to-dollar ratio as well. :-)

I looked at this a while back and the price for the whole bundle turned me off.

Now I'm looking at Stardrive on Steam instead.

I really enjoyed Distant Worlds, but like many here have said it defies reason that there has been no price drop nor any bundle price for a three year old game.

One of the things that really annoys me about Matrix Games is that they have no system in place for you to recover lost serial keys, nor may you re-download the original executable after a period of time. That business practice was common in 2005, but here in 2013 I think they must be the very last game publisher to still be doing that. They just don't seem to be customer friendly.

Yeah, I see it like Dominions 3, which has been $55+ since it came out quite a while ago. Niche product, but well done.

You don't really need to own all the expansions to enjoy this game. The vanilla game holds up well on its own. All in all, I have to go back to MOO2 to find a space 4x that I like as much as this one, even though I haven't played in awhile.

Look at this game reminded me of Derek Smart. Where has he been lately, anyway?

You just had to mention his name, didn't you? *shakes head* You are aware he Google's his name daily, right?

Distant Worlds just plain kicks ass! Is it over-priced? A little. But think about it this way...the time you spend in this game is massive! It's super intricate and detailed. It's the 'War in the East'/'War in the Pacific: AE' of space 4x games. They probably would have better success with putting things on STEAM but MATRIX mostly specializes in the niche wargaming genre, which, right now, is very small. Just as adventure games died off a while ago, along with space-sims, the hard core wargaming grognard genre is almost back to 'underground' status, as it was in the 80's when it began. I'm not a fanboy that thinks MATRIX can do no wrong. They can, and have at certain points. But they have their reasons for not making a bigger presence. That said, I would really love if they would put their games on STEAM eventually. Maybe if wargaming comes back 'en vogue' again....or maybe not.

Regardless, I'm seriously psyched about the expansion. I've played Legends to absolute death and then some. Mods help, but it's nice to see DW hasn't been abandoned by MATRIX...

Yeah and they don't bother putting it on steam.

They apparently think they get more money keeping price way high and exclusive to their thing.

When in reality, they'd make tons more bringing it to steam and selling it at a non crazy price.

$20 each for 3 items (base and 2 old expansions) for normal price of $60, package deal of $50 (package not including new expansion), and the new expansion preorder at $30 (10% pre-order sale of $27), they'd get more in a week on steam probably than they've gotten in a year otherwise.

I mean look at the railworks thing, thats about a niche as stuff gets and its had MASSIVE success on steam. Even though the entire package with all DLC is over $2 grand normally.

I heard this 4x game was a good one, but 100 for the whole package... that's insane. That kind of price is reserved to really hardcore wargame titles with tons of details and mechanics. 100 for a 4x game, either it has to be the best game ever made or I won't bother. Too expensive.
