LucasArts Closed

Disney has shut down seminal computer game developer LucasArts, reports Kotaku, saying over 150 jobs have been lost amid the cancellation of Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313. They attribute this to a reliable source, and a confirmation can be found on GameInformer, where they have a comment from a representative from LucasFilm saying the cancellation of Star Wars 1313 is not absolute, as they will be looking to license games like that planned action/adventure in the future. "It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we're just looking at different models rather than internal production... They're evaluating everything. There's always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing," the rep told them. "It's super sad. It's a terrible day. I want to make sure everyone realizes that there still will be Star Wars games out there."

And nothing of value was lost.

You guys clamor for those IPs, and they're still there. So you can keep right on ahead with that. In fact, as someone already mentioned, this could open up doors like, a new Double Fine-developed Monkey Island, etc.

It's the end of an era. I remember playing Blazeball on my commodore 64, made by Lucasarts.

Yeah, today LA doesn't mean much (the last really good game they came out with was Republic Commando), but for like 25 years it meant something.

Well if it wasn't for the exorbitant fees charged by LA, SWG would still be in existence and of course we can thank them for the destruction of such with the release of the nge version.

Good riddance!

Wait, LucasArts was still in existence as more than a name? I thought the whole company was just a logo that they stuck on other developer's Star Wars licenses.

Ooo, I like the metaphor.

I don't know, I'm going to maintain a BIT of optimism where that's concerned. They are turning towards licensing-only as a model. It strikes me that this makes it MORE likely that we could see a follow up to some of those games: Lucasarts itself would probably not have taken a chance on a new Maniac Mansion, as an example; but [developer name here] may be willing to take that chance, and Disney may be willing to accept the licensing fees.

Not sure why we're mourning. All Disney did was technically finish what Lucas did years ago.

What was the last good LucasArts game?
What was the last any LucasArts game?

It's been dead for years.

Under normal circumstances I'd say this bodes well for the IP, as maybe someone will actually make use of it as LucasArts sure wasn't. But this is Disney. Disney is horrible at video games. They go through so many absurd cycles of staffing up then laying off...

Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

That really sucks. Some great memories with many of their Star Wars titles. Oh well. Another one folds to corporate budget cuts.

Jesus, some of my favorite games were made by LucasArts. They haven't been that same company for a long time now but this still sucks

TIE Fighter, Grim Fandango, Dark Forces, Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, The Dig, etc. So many great games

edit: Between this and the abrupt end for Clone Wars, the new mouse overlord is not instilling a lot of confidence.
