Thief 4 Trailer

The recently teased Thief 4 Announcement Trailer has leaked, sneaking out into the night like someone who goes around stealing things (if only there was a word for that). The cinematic clip shows our protagonist skulking about, grabbing the goods, and making off into the night. Thanks VG247.

Also notice garrett's eyes. One of them is already a different color, signifying that it's mechanical.

so it can't be a reboot, but rather a continuation of the series.

This logic isn't.

Andrew Garfield wore the same color Spiderman costume as Tobey Maguire, so it can't be a reboot. What?

To throw more fuel to the flames, don't forget they also released a trailer for the trailer!

I can't be the only person who finds this practice irritating.

I did get a lot of mileage out of the original Dark Project intro video, which was all they dribbled out (plus a very vague webpage) for a long, long time. Must have watched that thing a hundred times.
But to be honest, the original Dark Project (title of Thief 1) videos and 2 and 3 too were animated paintings, which were both original and very full of atmosphere. A very thick, dark, oppressive atmosphere. I didnt get this feeling from the CGI movie they just posted.

If you're willing to completely dismiss a game simply because it has a different voice actor, it may be time to reassess your gaming priorities...

If it makes you feel better, there's a chance that they'll go back to the original voice actor if there's enough fan outrage. That's what happened with Hitman: Absolution.

And look how H:A turned out to be. You see, these are all signs of the shit that's to come; signs of the dumb approach the devs made when they sat around the table and first asked "So, what to do with this new project?".

Yes I'm completely dismissing this until it manages to catch my attention again, if it will. So far all I've heard and seen about this freaking title is horrifying, especially that dev interview last month.

It's too early for "mark my words: this will suck" but it's close. Very close, from the impressions I've had so far. I guess gameplay footage (ie a wallthrough) will slam the Maker's Hammer down for the actual verdict. Like it did with A:CM.

H:A wasn't a bad stealth game. It just wasn't a good Hitman game. It's entirely possible that the same will apply to Thief but as you said, it's too early to tell. At least wait until they release an actual gameplay walkthrough before declaring the death of the series.

I'd never agree with calling H:A a good stealth game. But I know it's beside the point.

I'm expecting a game too similar to Dishonored. And I'm one of the people who passionately hates Dishonored and feels a sorta anger toward the majority that seems to love the game due to shear disbelief that a game so bland, boring and bad could ever be loved by a community normally so unforgiving. The disbelief isn't born from my own subjective point of view but the fact that more than a handful of friends IRL completely agree with me.

Anyway.. what I try to say is that those somehow love Dishonored will probably enjoy Thief 4 anyway. I just hope the fans can cope with Garrett being bent over and molested until it changed him. Southpark should make and episode about this...

*sigh* But I'm not some future seeing prophet... Just... Fuck me the signs hurt.

Why are companies still spending money and resources on CGI trailers?
Noone cares about these anymore, everyone wants to see the real gameplay.
Real gameplay videos are much cheaper to make and carry a much bigger impact then some useless CGI video.

These videos exist to drive hype by invoking emotion in the general populous, not to showcase the game to educated consumers. In short, they are there to say "This game exists." not to say "This game is good."

And it works.

Uhh...what? How did a master thief let somebody steal his voice???

It doesn't really scream out Thief to me, but it will really come down to the gameplay. I think they should retain his real voice and the heavy emphasis on assassination technology feels like one of their stupid attempts to "fix" the series.
Combined with the early developer video, I am skeptical...
Also, where are they going with lore? At least they show the eye, but is this going to be a straight forward game about stealing jewelry? Garrett may have tried to tell himself that is all he was doing, but he was always pulled away by his destiny and/or otherworldly responsibilities...

Otherwise, what is the world and overall setting going to actually look like, especially in motion, and how large or complex will the levels be?

Waiting and watching,
Ray

Garrett's voice was a major reason why he is my favorite character of all times.

They truly bent him over and raped him to shreds. I wish this game wasn't in development. Fucking retard monkeys.

"..leave no trace behind" that's where he allllmost sounded like the ol' Garrett.

The Thief games were great because of their deep stealth mechanics, open-ended levels and intelligent (for the time) AI. If the new game retains those strengths, I'll be happy.

Apparently reboot/origin story, I recall hearing about was a joke on us. If not it's even more ridiculous since Garret was an orphan child/tween living on the streets, not a fully geared high tech assass.

I also remember when they were making claims Garrent doesn't/never would have house/home. Yeah of course what self respecting high tech (apparently) thief has a base of operations or home. Hell, thieves probably don't eat, sleep or take craps.

Who knows maybe we will get a chance to buy dlc that completely changes the Lore and History...or the voice. Imagine having to pay dlc to get the real Garret voice.

Iirc these are the same people who broke their own ingame Lore in DXHR with their dlc.

How did the DX:HR DLC break the game's lore?

In any case, while I'm not a fan of changing an established character's voice or lore, neither of those things are what made the Thief games great. The Thief games were great because of their deep stealth mechanics, open-ended levels and intelligent (for the time) AI. If the new game retains those strengths, I'll be happy.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
