BioShock Infinite Reviews Soar

The unfortunate inequitable review embargo for BioShock Infinite has expired, and viewpoints on Irrational Games' shooter prequel can now compete with each other for supremacy, just as Andrew Ryan would have wanted. Metacritic currently shows the game with 31 positive critic's reviews and a 95 metascore, which is in the rarified air of the best reviewed games of all time, including the original BioShock, which is one of seven PC games with a metascore of 96. As of now there are no user reviews, as the game is not due until tomorrow.

Meh, I'm still going to wait. Sim City has a bunch of 90 reviews from the Press before it shipped.

I have to wonder how much getting these games Free can fog the vision of reviewers.
In the simcity case, that wasn't the problem. The problem was they setup a private server, before the launch, for just journalists. They made sure it had near 100% uptime and good connections, and they just played with their close friends (mostly no griefing).

Problem was, the launch was NOTHING like what the reviewers experienced. In addition to the servers being total crap, there's griefers out there playing the game.

Plus, most reviewers didn't bother to review it enough to get to see the AI bugs, or the myriad of problems when the city gets bigger.

So its hard to blame them on the private server review, although some of them had enough of a clue to foresee those potential issues, and I liked how some of them adjusted the score after release to better reflect the actual customer experience (instead of the reviewer experience). But they should definitely take blame for not bothering to play enough to see the AI failings.

And it also shows some of the systemic issues in the reviewing process, namely reviewing games prior to release. Unfortunately that will likely never get fixed, due to almost no one turning down a chance to get a jump on the flood of reviews by getting one out early, and tons of users reading and relying on those advance reviews for buying decisions.

But for people with half a clue, they should realize they should put more weight on reviews after release, and look to make sure user experiences aren't total crap.

I'm curious as to what the user ratings will be, but I'll be as well. But I've got enough unplayed games sitting around I can wait until this one goes on sale.

Wow...them some scores....curious to see the user scores, i'm guessing 80-85'ish

There's usually a delta between user scores/reviews and press ones. Press journalists are analyzing the game in a specific manner, users often post on emotion (although there are plenty of intelligent ones). If someone doesn't like the logo or the character's voice, they could downrate the game a few points. And this says nothing of trolls who go in and pan the game for no reason.

The opposite is also true. The Transformers movies have pretty ghastly reviews, but are always rated higher by the general public.
Bullshit.

No one analyzes a game these days (except for the Germans?), they just post opinion pieces. Or piece of wank writing they hope their college professor will get hard over.

It's pathetic.

To most gamers these days a Review = the Score. Hence the brain dead zombie service that is, Metacritic. User scores, 0 or 10.

I doubt they spent anywhere near that on the game, that was some "financial analyst" guessing and the game is getting good reviews because it's genuinely really good

Far Cry 3 gets more disappointing the longer you play it IMO. It has a great opening and first 10ish hours but then the story devolves into weirdsville and the gameplay becomes repetitive and not terribly challenging once you get the skill trees fleshed out some. It was a great gift from the awesome Prez though so I can't fault the value proposition and I still thought it was a good game, just not a great one.

I'll wait. But I tend to do that. For example, I finally just bought Dishonored, only after it went on sale recently on GameFly for $23.99.

I'm waiting on dishonored as well. Am hoping for a price below $20...but I still haven't finished Far Cry 3 yet...need to do that.

System shock was barely playable. It doesn't matter how good the rest of the ingredients are if I don't ever want to keep playing it.

Meh, I'm still going to wait. Sim City has a bunch of 90 reviews from the Press before it shipped.

I have to wonder how much getting these games Free can fog the vision of reviewers. I know when I "bought" diablo 3 with credits and such, didn't spend any money on it, I wasn't that upset with how things turned out.

Other games that I've paid for, if those don't feel worth it, that is a totally different experience. That is a "You deserve to go out of business for taking my money in exchange for this trash you good for nothing bag of shit."*

I doubt reviewers ever get to experience that rage since most everything they play is either a business expense (at best) or just a free copy sent by the publishers.

I trust buyers like myself as far as game feedback. I want to see people who've paid that $60 price come out and talk positively about a game before I bother looking at it.

*Examples
Bought Swtor $60 - Meh, too bad it wasn't better.
Bought Diablo 3 $0 - Really disappointing game, but meh, $0.
Bought ME3 $60 - You should go out of business.

I think if you're going to charge someone $60 the game better deliver. If it doesn't you've made an enemy for life...or until your next game is balls to the wall awesome and somehow balances out the giant mountain of ship you created. (this never happens, companies never recover from this in my experience, once they go down hill they snowball)

Eh... Cutter's just going to say that because the mainstream media loves it that proves it's a piece of garbage. He lives in a win/win state of hatred and loathing that way.

Edit: Wow... That's a lot of perfect scores. Mostly european though. Interesting. I wonder how much the embargo and IGN's exception hurt the review scores though.

If Bioshock is a '96%' then what would System Shock be? 110%? Don't get me wrong, Bioshock was a great game, but System Shock was a good deal better. Shodan was so much better of a villain, and the RPG aspects of System Shock were superior to that of Bioshock.

I'm replaying SS2 right now. Enemies that respawn in your field of view, dated graphics engine even at it's release date (mods help this A LOT), a clunky interface, weapons that are unrealistically fragile like toilet paper (A conscious design decision granted), a *terrible* ending after one of the most awesome final levels of all time (and if you're not a hacker, I hope you saved 3 ICE picks, or the game is impossible to finish)...

SS2 is one of my favorite games of all-time, but technically it was a mess. The gameplay isn't particularly smooth or constant, level design was pretty utilitarian, intentionally, and the Body of the Many was a total stumble, even when the game came out. It's got some wrinkles and warts on it.

Compared to Bioshock, it's does less of what it wants to achieve than Bioshock did, although they oddly enough suffered from bad pacing and story for the last 1/4 of the game. Go figure. I don't suggest System Shock 2 universally- I know there's people that absolutely will not like it. Bioshock is a far easier suggestion however for most gamers.

Going home right now to play the PC version but I'm not worried, game looks absolutely badass even on the consoles, let alone the PC.

Oh by the way you access 1999 Mode by doing the old school Konami code at the main screen. If you don't have a controller then you just do it literally using the arrow keys, keyboard and enter. No clue what difficulty changes it specifically makes.

Playing Bioshock atm, bit of eh. Maybe it's because I've seen it all and the "shock" has warn off, which means, it's not a good game. Good games stand the test of time. Bioshock 2 seems more appealing atm.

Not to sound like a Cutter though, Infinite looks - infinitely better
