On SimCity Offline Regional Play

A story on Rock, Paper, Shotgun talks with Azzer, who has more to say on the topic of playing SimCity offline after his a video from this week showing the urban planning sequel playing offline after a bit of hacking to satisfy its reliance on contacting EA's servers to run. He speaks of the "absolute ease" with which the game could be made to simulate the behavior of entire regions on a local machine, which meshes with their previous report quoting an anonymous alleged Maxis engineer making similar comments. Thanks Joao.

The sad thing is, when Spore was released gamers served EA with at least 3 classaction lawsuits and they all won against EA because of the DRM within Spore. Why can't gamers do the same now, where the case is even more clearcut than Spore? EA would have his ass handed by the courts.

It doesn't matter, EA won't change their ways, and they won't get my money.

Everyone knows the online always is copyright protection, nothing more. Maxis basically insults when they say the game is built around online play.

Fuck you EA and fuck you maxis.

I agree. All this "control" and "data mining" stuff strikes me as untrue, because you can control and do data mining just fine without requiring always-on. Steam does it. Steam does it well. If you're going after that you just do what Steam did.

Yeah, I know, people think EA is stupid and inept so they did what Steam did but dumber.

But I just don't believe it. You can do all that stuff extremely well without always-on. You cannot do DRM extremely well without it. Control and data mining aren't really enhanced by it.

I'm a little surprised the backlash has been what it is. That's a good thing, but I'm still surprised...
That's what happens when casual users only familiar with The Sims decide to buy a game and don't understand why it has to be played online. More people will recognise SimCity because of The Sims than because of the previous games.

No, he's saying it would be easy and he's right. The way they keep on with the bad PR completely avoiding the topic and just rehashing how much people love the game speaks volumes about the entire issue. This has always been about control and data mining for money.

I can believe it would be a lot of work to release offline regions for solo play, but only because the server mechanism was designed to be cloud based. If they'd designed it to be offline in the first place, it wouldn't be as good, it would be better! (edit: and still could be, a lot of work shouldn't be out of the question.)

Stuff like mods are not hacks, or that in many ways it's like an MMO, I think these are badly phrased and nothing more (they meant cracksl; in the many ways just related to further updates). However, they've really got to get their shit together and be consistent. Don't say mod discussion is allowed and then stop the chat, for example.
