New Warhammer 40,000 TBS Game Planned

MCV has word on a Warhammer 40,000 turn-based strategy game in the works at Slitherine. Details are scant, but word is development is already underway. "This deal represents yet another testament to our continuous aim to reach new audiences, without losing sight of who we are and what we do best," says Slitherine chairman JD McNeil. "It's all about creating strategy games that are targeted to a particular audience and addressing a very specific need in the market. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is a perfect fit for the style of strategy games that we make and will be very popular with fantasy and science fiction fans alike. Joining forces with Games Workshop will allow us to bring an wonderfully deep and appropriate IP to the Turn Based Strategy genre." MCV also has word on free-to-play isometric 3D games based on Warhammer 40,000's Titans "incorporating single, multi-player and social gaming modes, delivering both single and chain mission tactical experiences across a broad platform range, including PC/Mac and tablets."

Considering Sega got the rights for WH: Fantasy Battle and the prior relationship between GW and Relic, I'd be really surprised if they're not just taking their time negotiating a new licensing deal.

GW is notorious for suing anyone that might cut into their profits, like fanpages, or authors who happened to use the words 'Space Marine' regardless of context or publication date. I can't imagine GW allowing a company to make a TBS game about 40k that would actually reflect the tabletop equivalent. At which point, what difference does it really make? Another 40K game where you micro manage a squad of elites rather than play as a battlefield general commanding an army... Here's hoping I'm wrong and my pessimism is unfounded, but I doubt it.

The more companies stick as close to the roots of the original, the more successful it will be.

A Warhammer TBS is exactly what warhammer is, it will be a huge success if it's done even remotely well.

And games like Neverwinter which is nothing like DnD, well lets just say there's sure to be a few WOW dolts who might like it, but its going to fail so hard it'll be embarrassing...

I loved DoW 1, but was not a fan of DoW 2. I'm excited to see what some other devs can do with the 40k universe, as it's got a lot of great material to work with.

I'd rather see Relic do an Aliens game and someone else do either Dawn of War 3 or other 40k TURNBASED! statergy game (Heroes of might and magic style would be cool even) .
