PlanetSide 2 Patch Adds VR Training Center

The PlanetSide 2 Forums have details on the new patch that's now live in PlanetSide 2, updating the MMOFPS with a bunch of changes, an increase in passive certification gain, and the addition of new Virtual Reality Training Center where you can test your gear (thanks PlanetSide Universe). Here's word on the training center:

 • This area is accessible through any warp terminal
 • This is a safe test area where you can try every weapon, vehicle, and upgrade available to your empire!
 • Each empire has its own Training area.
 • This area has target dummies for vehicles and infantry that have the same properties as in normal combat.
 • An indoor shooting range with random targets at 10 meter intervals for reflex practice and target recognition is available.
 • An outdoor shooting range with infantry and vehicle targets to train with all manner of weaponry is also available.
 • There is an open area to practice driving or flying with vehicles.

I seem to recall giving this game a go and being thoroughly unimpressed but seeing this topic made me give it another go. Seeing that it was already in my Steam list I launched the game only to find it needed to download 7.5GB of data. What. The. Fuck. What the hell is the 9.7GB of data in my Steam folder doing then? And why the fuck is it downloading at 1/4 the speed I usually get from Steam?
They did some fiddling with the maps in one of the big updates a while ago so yeah you basically redownloaded the whole game.

The download goes through the launcher i.e. from SOE not Steam. It's usually fast for me, for whatever that's worth.

The US flag for "English" is very common, though most likely by going through Steam you actually have a US account and not a Euro account - which goes through ProSeiben. This does not matter at all, except that ProSeiben are crap so you've done it the "right" way.

I have no idea what some of you guys are talking about. This game has to be one of the easiest shooters I've ever played, and shooters aren't even my favorite genre. You enter the game, hit insert key to auto join a team, you select a class (which is very self explanatory), you click on the team lead and select deploy. Now you're with your unit either defending or attacking the enemy who has a different colored uniform. As you play, you easily figure out what your class can do, or maybe go to a vehicle terminal and easily figure out what the vehicles do. Please, someone tell me what the difficulty is.

I've been playing this game for a while now, just a little less these days because frankly I'm getting bored with how easy and mindless it really is.
Not sure if I can say "one of the easiest". When I started playing it wasn't immediately clear what the objectives were, how to go about accomplishing them, why everyone was standing around, why there was a building we couldn't enter that people were still spawning in, how to get up to a biolab, how to find the squad leader or what world he was on, etc.

Basic gameplay mechanics are easy, and getting kills is easy, but there could be some better explanations on "big picture" things.

They had a noobie guide during beta. A quick google search is all you need to find a "beginner's guide". I wish they would spend time adding more gameplay mechanics than a hand-holding tutorial. Crap like that is going to hurt the game, not make it better.

And gamers wonder why triple A titles are getting dumbed down.

So I got into the game and within seconds it crashed to desktop, giving me a "GAME ERROR G12" message in a web browser. Then I launched into it again and everything worked, except even on max graphics it was running at 150fps so my GPUs went into overdrive - enabling v-sync solved that. As for the game, I had absolutely no clue what to do - it literally made no sense and I've been playing first person shooters since the original Wolfenstein 3D.

Also, the game either has a really shitty UI or it's broken on my system. I'm pretty sure it's not meant to have error messages everywhere or hash-tags and UI before every item.

No wonder they have to give it away for free.

Yeah those screen shots are definitely not normal. It might have been better to do a fresh install, and not through steam (the default patcher is quick enough). Though I do envy your ridiculously overpowered system.

It's pretty impressive for a game to piss me off before even getting to play it. Then there's the minor touches, like the English language option displaying an American flag - I live in England, the country that invented the language. Is it really necessary to piss off the 120 million English speaking people that live in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand by displaying an American flag? Either display the geographically appropriate flag or don't bother.

Argh, it doesn't even give me an ETA - just a meaningless percentage bar.

Pretty sure JohnBirshire was refereeing to when the game was first released, you did immediately got spawned in the action but yeah after the first major patch you now spawn at the warp gate.

A little more structure, especially for unaffiliated loners, would be welcome. But over all it should still be up to the players to determine what they find strategically important, while perusing some kind of overarching goal.

playing the game with a good outfit and really good platoon leader makes all the difference.

a lot of leaders don't understand what makes the game fun for players - some will have you capture almost empty bases for hours if you are unlucky - there is strategic value there sure, but my god its as boring as euro truck simulator.

My number one criticism of this game is that it was atrocious for newcomers. Thrown down in the middle of a fight with no clue how to even control their character made many people say "screw this" and quit immediately.

That's because every single first person shooter for the last 15 years or so has had the same default WASD and mouse aiming controls.

If you have never played a first person shooter fair enough, but the game spawns you at the warp gate where you can't die.

Still this VR training is a very nice addition since you can give all of those new weapons in an easy manner and with all of their upgrade options.

To me a much more immediate problem is that 2 out of the 3 continents are abandoned wastelands. I would like to play on those continents for verity, but there's nothing to do without enough players to fight. Even a very modest incentive, like an xp boost that rotates among continents, would be enough to get players out of Indar.

Giving new players somewhere to go and learn is a good thing but it doesn't solve the major flaw in the design of the game. If they would put in an endgame that resets every time one faction "wins" it would go a long way toward making the game's players feel like what they were doing mattered.

oh but having a "winning" event is totally sacrilegious to Planetside players, go back to call of duty of battlefield etc yada yada

it would be cool to have an end game event, I don't ever seeing it happening because the vocal push back is too great.

And therein is the problem: without an endgame event, a goal that everyone can strive toward, Planetside 2 isn't really a "game" at all. It's just a massively multiplayer shooting gallery and that becomes a snorefest pretty quickly no matter how good you are at it.

edit: content locking sounds interesting but it probably wont happen all that often unless there's a huge imbalance in one faction over the other two.

I've seen continents dominated numerous times in the several hours I played Planetside 2. There isn't any real purpose in it, but it does happen. And it usually stays that way until the players on the side that's doing the dominating get bored with it and either relent and allow the other factions out of their warpgate areas or logout entirely.

It needs other factors to make it interesting.

Quests/missions/orders: Some form of overarching structure (like you'd expect from a game about armies). Escort missions (escort this radar array to this base and get expanded target info for 3 hours on this continent), cargo drops (take a galaxy to there), espionage (go to base x and hack terminal y), race to defend (a base is under cap, you get flash orders to reinforce asap)

Some form of AI: Base defenses etc should have a rudimentary AI. Turrets that autofire with limited accuracy (so a human driver should always be superior but in a pinch the base won't just spread it's proverbial legs and yell "HELLO BOYS!")

Awards/Medals/Commendations: Literally based on battle size/duration etc. Say you are in one of those long battles that go on for hours and have literally hundreds of players, you might get a patch or commendation for fighting a certain battle once it passes thresholds (number of kills/revives/repairs, points captured, damage taken without dying etc)

Defeating a base when there's a battle for it is about equivalent to winning a round in a more normal team FPS, in a sense. But yeah they need to make capping a continent to be more of an event.

Also resources need to be a bit tighter, even after certing into vehicle cooldown I'm very rarely unable to spawn a vehicle due to insufficient resources. If there's any reason I need to wait it's always the cooldown.

Also, has to be said the community isn't exactly great. SOE have got themselves a bad habit of listening too much so there's endless whining about how the other factions are OP, anything that balances out their favourite class or whatever. If they're not whining on Reddit they're downvoting anything that doesn't push their agenda. Seems a lot of outfits of the same faction don't get along.

I think the best solution would be a guided tutorial -- tips you get while playing the game. To me, "do the tutorial" is synonymous with "read the manual". I know I don't speak for the majority, but when I get something new (especially games), I'm more inclined to dive in first and consult the manual later. The last thing I want to do is be slowed down by a manual.

A more intuitive solution would be a guided in-game tutorial(as in you're actually playing in the full blown game world, not a restricted, isolated zone). Tip, hints, and things like that. Things to get a new player up and running with less confusion. I believe Natural Selection 2 handles this VERY well.

Anyway, the VR area is about as far from a tutorial as you can get. At the moment, it's just a place to try everything out before wasting station cash or hard earned certification points.

Try "bad" because it's simply pointless to play. For a game that is supposed to be about a planetwide war between three disparate factions it typically boils down to bottleneck battles that everyone joins in on not because they really want their faction to take or hold a particular area but because it's the quickest way to rack up XP. Taking and holding any given area is totally pointless and adds absolutely nothing to the game. There isn't any real benefit to having your faction totally own the map and there isn't any real detriment to being pushed back to your faction's warpgate. There is no "endgame" so there is no real point to anything that happens in the game, ever.

Giving new players somewhere to go and learn is a good thing but it doesn't solve the major flaw in the design of the game. If they would put in an endgame that resets every time one faction "wins" it would go a long way toward making the game's players feel like what they were doing mattered.

That makes much more sense - thanks. Was sort of curious how much this game was worth diving into again (although the "Continent locking" thing in the post below yours sounds interesting).

They will be implementing lockable continents next month I believe. Yes, here it is: Continent-Locking

While this is a small step in the right direction it still doesn't provide a reason for any faction to do it. So you conquer every territory on a continent (except the enemy warpgates, of course) and the continent cannot be attacked for a period of time. So what? There still isn't a point to the game. There is still no way for any faction to "win" which negates any reason to play at all let alone cooperate in some team driven strategy.

What they need to do is provide a way for one faction to conquer everything, show a "hey congrats for being on the winning team!" screen and reset everyone to a start point so it can start all over again. That would give players a goal bigger than "I'm going to join this huge battle over here because that's where all the XP earning is going on." The fact that the designers didn't consider that early on just shows how little actual thought they put into the game part of the design.
