Tomb Raider Patched

Steam News has details on a new patch for Tomb Raider that's now automatically available to update the PC edition of the platformer reboot, addressing issues with NVIDIA hardware, Lara's spiffy new hair rendering, and other usability and gameplay issues. Here are the patch notes:

We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Tomb Raider, build 1.0.718.4. This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.

This update addresses a variety of issues that we either found out about shortly before release or immediately after.

Fixes include:

Addressed some stability and startup issues on machines that have both Intel and NVIDIA graphics hardware.

Fix for players being unable to progress related to the boat in the beach area.

Some fixes for crashes on startup and when selecting Options.

Some small improvements to TressFX hair rendering.

Fixes for various graphics glitches, including certain effects not being visible in fullscreen mode.

Fixed a problem that caused some users to not be able to use exclusive fullscreen.

Added support for separate mouse/gamepad inversion for aiming, as well as support for x-axis inversion.

Fixes related to the benchmark scene and benchmark mode.

Various other small fixes.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone. If you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build716.5, that can be used to switch back to the previous version. Please note however that you can only play multiplayer with people that share your version.

THIS is one of the core reasons I have great respect for the developers. They obviously didn't make this game for the losers that like to jerk off on Lara like they did 10 years ago. This game is not about a sexy heroin, but just a woman trying to survive. No unnecessary nudity or anime-kinda cleavage. I applaud them.

This is a great game. I'm enjoying it allot! Great gameplay and atmosphere. The game manages to make you become Lara -- it's that immersing -- and believe it. She doesn't turn from fragile archaeologist into rambogirl in the blink of an eye -- if she ever will.. I'm only 5 or so hours into the game. The game takes its time.

A story that takes its time is usually a good story, in my experience, and the same goes for games.

Oh I don't know, I saw plenty of moobs and fatties last time I was in Europe, I don't think that's exclusively an American problem. I liked the game overall - I would give it an 85%+. I got 100% of all the collectibles, all skills, and all upgrades and my play time is 17 hours.

Thankfully, the game ran perfect in crossfire, though the whole TressFx thing is silly. Having individual hairs moving about does not justify the performance hit and it drove me crazy that it did not actually rest on her shoulders, instead floating atop a magical shield she had atop her shoulders. It might be patched now, but it's too late.

It's a good purchase overall (note that I only paid $36 through GMG,) but it feels a bit inconsistent. It's a less polished Uncharted with few tombs to raid, somewhat generic combat, and some forced character development. I do like the idea of seeing Lara start from scratch, but they played her too weak while contrasting it against the wholesale murder of a hundred people.

Going into it, the beginning is actually the worst part of the game - I was freaking out that the levels were really small, the QTEs were pointless, everything was blocked off, and things (wolves) were spawning over and over in the same locations. Play the game for a few hours and you get more into the story, you gain a few more upgrades or abilities, the scale of the world increases quite a bit, and they give you more "open" areas to just freely explore, including teleportation to earlier levels to look for any items you may have missed.

I found the exploration aspects much more interesting and I really hope they focus on it more in future games. It's not a classic Tomb Raider game, but for a current generation game, it's pretty good. Buy it for $40 or less, play it a few hours, and I think both Uncharted fans and Tomb Raider fans will get some enjoyment from it.
They either really changed direction midway through or gained confidence.

I certainly find it difficult to part with that much for a video game, but I did for this one and I am loving it. I should point out however that I have a nVidia 570 in the machine I am playing the game on, and I guess that makes me not have some of the technical issues other users are having despite running it on Ultra settings. From what I have read, if you have a 6xx series Nvidia card it might be worth waiting until nVidia releases the new drivers that will apparently fix the issue. In the interests of full disclosure I should also point out that I have always been a fan of the series and have bought, played, and loved all 4 Uncharted games as well. Only gripe is multiplayer (which is a completely unexpected options) looks fun but currently it's impossible to get a game with the crappy "quick join/no game browser" system. Pretty happy though overall.
