Thief (4) Details Inbound

GameInformer reveals their April cover story to be about the Thief reboot in the works at Eidos Montreal that was was announced as Thief 4, but now seems to be simply titled Thief. They offer some artwork that's part of a rollout of assets (which appears may have been usurped already (thanks nin)) along with a video previewing their coverage. Here's word:

Series hero Garrett returns to the Gothic, industrial metropolis known simply as the City to steal any and everything that will make him richer. Unfortunately, the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague and lorded over by a political tyrant known as the Baron. In order to survive his adventures, Garrett will have to pay attention to his environment and make use of the may possible paths through each of the game's levels.

Square Enix plans to release Thief for PS4, PC, and other next-gen platforms sometime in 2014. Check out our coverage trailer for a taste of all the content you can look forward to absorbing over the next month.

Fantastic news, I can't wait! PLEASE don't $*%# it up!!! I hope they keep true to the original Thief; however, one thing I would like to see is an improved inventory system.

I don't. I thought the first level (the prison break one) sucked, then the next one in the city was fantastic, and I had a great time. And then they sent me right back to the EXACT SAME LEVEL for the next mission. I slogged through it, got annoyed, quit, and haven't played it again since.

I keep looking at it and think "I really need to finish Dishonored." Then I go play something else.

The point where you are captured and lose all your gear *gasp!* was where I quit playing.

Actually I take that back I played one level later and was bored out of my skull at the limited nature of the levels. When they were open wide it rocked, but when they boiled down to "pathways" it sucked donkey balls and I quit playing.

DX:HR was excellent and the rubbish boss fights were only 50% their fault, in that they didn't make them but they should have paid more attention. I didn't like the expansion but that's a relatively minor complaint.

Heh, that's a bit of an ironic stance.... are you aware that the expansion had what was considered a "fixed" approach to boss fights - you could approach that particular battle any way you wanted to, and even just knock the guy out instead of killing him if you wanted? It was one of the better points.

The boss fight in the expansion may have been better than those in the base game, but the expansion as a whole was extremely forgettable ... so forgettable, I don't actually remember a boss fight. I think there was one in a huge hanger which gave you much more freedom. That's good, but on the whole, the expansion wasn't special and when I play through DX:HR again, I'll probably skip it.

I suppose I can't completely disagree... what I hated the most as well was that it didn't even integrate properly into the main campaign, yet takes place squarely in the middle of the story. Meaning that either I play through the whole original game and then have to "mentally rewind" where I am in the plot to even attempt to immerse myself in the DLC, or guestimate ahead of time whereabouts in the plot I need to save, manually bomb out, and then launch into a completely separate executable.

I really don't understand why they couldn't just inject it in between level loads - it would've squeezed in perfectly with a few adjustments. I know from a technical standpoint they did some engine updates which made it inherently incompatible with the original game, but I don't feel it was worth it.

The chances of this being a pure stealth game are slim to none. It'll most definitely make combat a more viable option than it was in the previous games.
I'm betting you're right. Which is a shame. Dishonored had some great stealth gameplay but I felt the design and gameplay options they added to support full combat weakened the game. I know everyone loves Dishonored and I enjoyed playing it but there was some element of "meh" to the whole thing I can't quite put my finger on. Something a little too Harvey Smith minimalist about it a la Deus Ex Invisible War. Like he applied his philosophy of boiling everything down to the absolute core elements needed and discarded anything else as distractions. Maybe it's that half the equipment and powers were useless to me. Yet when I compare stealth features of Dishonored against those of Thief they come out about even. Like I said, I haven't put my finger on it yet.

No way this is going to be bow only weapons, get ready for Gunner Garrot or Magical Garrot!

Garrot is scary.....much silly laughter.

Yeah this sounds really serious

To me Human Revolution was definitely awesome. It transcended gaming and I think about it still from time to time. Not saying it was perfect, but it was truly touching and yes, more than the sum of it's parts. On the other hand, I didn't like the previous games :p

I think I enjoyed HR more than the original. If definitely stuck around in my head longer, thinking about it.

Looks great and I'm happy Garrett is returning.

About the bow, it makes sense to me to be made that way. He's already got a mechanical eye and we've seen what the builders and mechanists can do.

QFT. DE:HR is one of the most overrated games of the decade. Unlike the original, it was less than the sum of its parts.

I didn't think it was that overrated, people were pretty reasonable about its pros and cons. They loved the style and atmosphere, didn't like the boss fights and closed in levels. The critics went overboard but they always do.

You mean like the boss fights?

No. Faith is earned.

Yes, because three fights that take a total of 10 minutes (and can be completely negated by the Typhoon) completely do away with 50 odd hours of awesome?

Creston

Zactly. And those boss fights weren't done by them, and they've openly admitted they didn't like the way they turned out.

They were shitty design decisions and shouldn't have been shoe-horned in to the game.

You want to make excuses for half-ass attempts, that's fine. It's your money and your time. But it's not going to be the same for everyone.

DX:HR was a good game but it was far from "awesome". It's predecessor was awesome.

Disagreed. It was awesome, and those boss battles were crappy but hardly an important part of the game.
Yeah, I know, I'm saying boss battles weren't an important part of the game, but when the entire game took me 22 hours and the boss battles combined took me maybe 20 minutes I'd say they weren't important enough to do much damage to the whole.

You're very aggressive in your hate for that game.
