Dead Space 4 Cancelled?

Videogamer.com reports development of Dead Space 4 has been cancelled by Electronic Arts (though a next installment in the shooter series has yet to be announced) based on poor sales of Dead Space 3. They attribute this unconfirmed rumor to "a source familiar with the unannounced project" speaking on the condition of anonymity, who tells them the game was in preproduction at Visceral Games, and that a small team at Visceral Montreal was working on prototypes for the project. Their source says Visceral Montreal was closed as a result of the game being cancelled, which supports a report from a couple of weeks ago where a former Visceral Montreal employee claimed the studio's entire staff was let go. They contacted EA for comment, and were told the company does not comment on rumor or speculation (except when they chose to).

It is worth pointing out the original devs jumped ship after the first one, along with other key people they took along with them. Completely different folks involved in 2 and 3.

google Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey

Something needs to change in this industry, these giant publishers need to go away and the model needs to find a way to be reborn.
The sheer amount of abuse and burnout in the industry is telling.
I respect these teams so much, and yet publishers like EA treat them like disposable dogshit.

This business needs a union of some sort that will protect these people from this constant and never ending abuse. I don't know..i don't have the answers..

It's ironic because the support infrastructure in the gaming industry is often untouched - "business development", marketing, HR, IT, etc, while the actual content creators are laid off immediately, often times even if the game breaks even.

Same in any industry. Typically they run the support roles as close to bare bones, and typically those are harder to replace people. There are thousands of people out there that can animate a model pretty damn well, making them somewhat easy to swap out. It's a skillset that typically has a short ramp-up time (assuming someone knows the tools being used.)
The business functions are harder because there are fewer solid candidates. You need someone that knows the industry and, in the case of marketing and PR, has contacts. This makes them harder to replace, as it takes a year for someone coming from outside to learn it.

The rot, where it is, comes higher up. I know good people that worked their asses off and really cared about games that lost their jobs at THQ. It wasn't their fault, either, that the c-suite was making awful decisions year after year after year.

A union isn't the answer. A union will get you what Hollywood has - contract workers rather than employees. That's even worse than what we have now.

EA isn't as much of a problem as they were, anyway. They do far less buying and razing awesome studios these days. They don't have the buying power, but I think they've learned that lesson. A bit.
The issue now is more just a function of no one understanding what to do about how much it costs to make a game with cutting edge graphics. Most studios decided the way to handle that is by reducing single player to 6-7 hours.

It isn't just games dealing with this, either. Look at Hollywood now. The most expensive movies of all time are the ones heaviest with CGI - movies like Oz Great and Powerful which is 100% greenscreened cost over $200MM. Nuts. And then the artists doing those effects get laid off and the studios get closed weeks after winning awards.
Don't know the answer. Industry leading computer visuals are just extremely expensive...

All I want is a shoulder-cam to ass-cam mod... and there still isn't one for Dead Space 1.

Between this and Resident Evil 6, I wonder if publishers will finally learn that games aren't made successful by turning them into an indistinct sludge of popular tropes to attain "broader appeal" but by making them appeal to the core audience they were made for. Turning Dead Space 3 into a Gears of War clone with darker hallways didn't interest the mainstream and it turned off the series fans, now it's a failure. Not everything has to appeal to every possible player. You aren't going to make the next Angry Birds, that game's an outlier.

With costs rising so quickly, and with fears over what they'll be for next-gen, there's definitely a feeling that you need broad appeal to survive. If you go niche you may be more loved but you'll probably be less purchased.

It's probably short sighted thinking, because something less loved will also end up being less purchased in the future.

More niche games sell fine, anyway. Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout are totally niche, and refined for broader appeal, but in ways that keep their niche rather than sell it out.

SimCity will probably be an enormously huge seller. And it's definitely niche. Uncertain what they changed for broader appeal, but according to reviews it seems to be nothing that fundamentally alters the gameplay or depth. If it wasn't for the DRM that would probably be an easy one to root for to get EA to realize how to and how not to do this.

I just don't get the thinking behind "well, they made a hit property, made an even more successful sequel, but the audience was maybe a bit tired of it and the third didn't do so well.

Kill them all."

Maybe lightning didn't strike the same place 3 times in 5 years, but maybe the same god can send an equally large bolt in a new direction?

edit - wait, seems it was Visceral California that did Dead Space. Visceral Montreal did Army of Two, which is set to be released end of month. How do you shut a studio a month before releasing their game?
But the Army of Two games were... lacking something.

Which is what every major studio is potentially facing, if their next 'iteration' fails to live up to expectations (read: costs more to produce than it eventually earns).

I have no idea what Dead Space 3 was like, but it probably cost a shitload to make.

It's weird how the second game went from being considered a success at 3 million copies sold to the third game needing to sell 5 million at a bare minimum to justify its existence. Development is expensive as hell these days but at some point you have to wonder when that sales bar is too high and it's time to examine the internal infrastructure at some of these publishers.

Oh well, I haven't really enjoyed Dead Space 3 outside of the space sections. They just went apeshit on the action and the game isn't terribly exciting as an action vehicle.
