The controls are FINALLY no longer sluggish and wonky like their past games

I had very little interest in Arma 3 before you said this. I pre-ordered, and build a computer just for Arma 2 only to give up on it due to poor controls and terrible/buggy menu system. If they have finally built a good interface and controls I wouldn't care if the graphics looked like Arma 1.

Having never played any of the previous games, is this primarily multi?

It's primarily coop multi. The real meat of the game is the simple mission editor which let's you drop AI in and coop against them. The rabid fans of the series are really fans of the editor, no one actually plays the sp campaigns.

There certainly is a ton of SP. But you'll get the most fun out of messing around in the editor. Rather than sitting through BIS's awful campaigns.

Just tried some Infantry Combat. Wowzers! Bis has come a long way! Much improved visuals and movement FEEL. And radio chatter. Keybinding is pretty robust even at this point so far. Character models, weaps, and terrain detailing are all very nice. I think Bis has a Hit on their hands. ;p

I just played one SP mission (died though lol) and I agree, BIS has their act together! The controls are FINALLY no longer sluggish and wonky like their past games, the graphics are great, and the sound and feel of the firefights is pretty damn amazing.

Yeah the radio chatter is much better too. It's no longer this weird robotic OH...NO..THREE...IS...DOWN. Although, in a strange way I kind of miss that, lol. One thing BIS never got right in the past was the driving AI. I am really curious if they finally fixed that too.

Too bad I have to go to work now, damn it!

There has always been a fairly large sp campaign, and the multiplayer portion as well.

I know indies paved the way for this but I am really iffy about alpha stuff being on Steam, it just doesn't seem like a good precedent to set even with all of their other efforts at curation.

Well I dunno, I hope it leads to them releasasing a proper game eventually rather than the buggy messes they are famous for. For myself, knowing their reputation, Im not going to bother with this Alpha, I might join beta if Im still alive by the time the game gets to that phase...

After watching Dslyecxi's youtube videos on arma 3, it's hard not to be excited about this one.
