EVE Online Boasts 500K Subscribers

CCP Games announces that EVE Online has passed a new subscriber milestone, saying their sci-fi MMORPG now has over a half-million paid players. "Ten years after release, it is incredibly inspiring that, through a lot of hard work from our EVE Online team, we are crossing the half-million subscriber mark," said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. "For me, this is a true testament that EVE can live on forever, as long as we do right by her. We have not come to this point alone; millions of players have helped push us to this milestone. I now know in my mind what I previously only believed in my heart: that EVE will outlive us all."

Considering the majority of f2p models are horrible cash grabs, I'm glad they are not.

I like having the full experience for a nominal monthly fee, rather than never having the full experience in F2P, without spending hundreds of dollars.

So kindly take that shit somewhere else, sir.

I really do love playing EVE, but I do not play anymore due to the $14.99 subscription model.

As the MMO industry has evolved away from charging subscriptions, I too have evolved in not wanting to pay for one.

If CCP would move to a free to play model, I would be back in a heartbeat.

Or at least move to a tiered subscription model. There should be at least $5 and $10 levels too.

While EvE is (arguably) a great game, there is something profoundly disturbing about it outliving any one person or group of people.

I think it's kind of neat!

I fired up my subscription but I didn't play it enough previously to know whether the changes made to PvE were substantial or not through the various expansions. I assume they have though and I'm secretly reaping the benefits.

As for the grind, yeah, that's always going to be a part of Eve as well as the time to skill up to pilot certain ships. I spent 27 days gearing up for an Orca that cost roughly 700 million ISK and my major source of income was mining .5 space with a Retriever that only made ~16 million ISK an hour. Belt rats are mostly worthless to salvage in Highsec and the bounty reward is usually 10 - 25k ISK so a drop in the bucket while I sit.

Working my way to buy PLEX now to extend my subscription.

Its been at least three of four years since I last played. I wonder if the PvE component is any better now than it was at the time, or the grind for that matter. (it was terrible)
