Assuming that's 100GB for a 2 hour UHD movie, that's about 14MB/s, or 112Mb, stable connection. I have a 55Mb connection but I wouldn't say I reliably get much more than about half that, so in theory, I'd need at least a 220Mbit line. Ouch.
That would also burn through data caps, even assuming they're 'inflation adjusted' to suit the higher speed. If I got 4x the speed and 4x the data cap, it would be 800GB in peak times, or 4 movies a month, and nothing else.
TL;DR: that's a lot of data. |

Exactly.
Yeah, but they have pieces. Everyone has pieces. I'm less happy about it being consolidated.
Plus, TW, ComCast, etc., all have fewer friends than Google, and none are part of my public persona, unlike Google.

If media companies continue down the digital route away from physical media (already talk of 4K)...yeah. I can see it, easy. You think the current infrastructure will support that, to multiple homes?

Actually yes, it's pretty much required now. At a minimum most home users need 100mbit. The reason being that a lot of technology is going in to putting things "in the cloud", and once you start placing entire applications and half your OS in the cloud you're going to need speeds comparable to you hard disk. Once everything becomes cloud based and the desktop a thing of the past, then internet speed will be the new video card upgrade.
Whether or not that's how things will turn out, I really couldn't say, but I do know a lot of companies are spending some big bucks trying to do away with the desktop. One of their critical road blocks is internet speed.
"If you build it, they will come." might not stand for everything, but I know that if people have faster internet that it will get used, just the same as faster PC's are being utilised now. |

But all it takes is 1 new-comer with lots of cash to offer the high tier at competitive prices and all the other ISP's go down in flames crying. Because once there at good price, adoption will sky-rocket. Check out the prices. Gigabit for $70. And 5 down, 1 up is FREE. No caps.
That these guys are 4 hours away (Kansas City, with me in Tulsa) is just killing me. SOUTH, GOOGLE, SOUTH!
Fuck cable!
I don't think Google is really going to expand all that much, sadly. The telcos would just harass them through government so much that it wouldn't be worth it.
We're going to be stuck with terribly overpriced, shitty internet for a long fucking time to come.
