The Banner Saga: Factions Launches

Steam News announces the release of The Banner Saga: Factions, Stoic Studio's free-to-play Windows/OS X strategy/RPG. The Stoic Studio Website offers a launch trailer, word that the game's first tournament will take place tomorrow, and explains the difference between the F2P multiplayer game and the game's single-player component:

Some people have had questions about what "Factions" is, and why we released it separate from the single player Saga. To summarize, we built combat for the single player game and decided to release it as multiplayer competitive game free and early as we continue to develop the single player game. Unlike many "free to play" games, there's no energy system, no pay to win, and matches are made between teams with even power, regardless of whether they spent money or not. In fact, we've pretty much designed a game that you never need to pay a cent for, truly and honestly. We've probably screwed ourselves. In the meantime, work continues heavily on the single player campaign.

I wish I liked the game better. I usually go for this genre, but there are so many design choices that just make it feel so slow and not fun. RNG, one character per turn, arenas that look small but are full of space that take forever to cross... There is a real disconnect between theme and gameplay.

I would rather play chess.

Could be. Or it could get people that might not normally check it out to try it for free, enjoy it, and then buy the SP portion when it's ready.

I think it's a smart move. Good luck to them!

Love the art for this game! Bloody fantastic! Not much interested in the MP side of it but I'm curious as hell to see what the SP side will be like. Still, I'll give this a whirl meanwhile for no other reason than to ogle the art.
