I got myself a "Matrix" style flip phone...and even when it breaks I probably won't get a smartphone. My cell phone is for phone calls. I have zero interest in having my phone become so much a part of my life that everything I do goes through it. Hell, I don't even use text messaging...if it's important enough to bug me while I am out and about then call me or leave a voice mail don't type me some fucked up message made up of misspelled words and annoying acronyms.

My step-daughter can't get from one side of the street to the other without looking at hers 30 times....not exactly a habit I want to pick up. We are going to have future generations that have a permanent arch to their neck by age 30. If you want to look them in the eyes you will have to get on your knees and look straight up. You might have to knock the smartphone out of their hands to get their attention though.

"I have zero interest in having to compulsively hammer nails into everything I see, so I won't buy a hammer."

Dunno, man. It's always so weird when I see these arguments. People make it about Facebook, too. "I don't want my whole life to revolve around Facebook, so I don't use it."

Do you lack self control, or do you think that you'd magically become some kind of monster that can't operate without your phone in your hand?
Personally, I find smartphones terribly useful. Sitting on the subway and suddenly unable to remember the name of the older sister on Charles In Charge? Hell, I have all of Wikipedia at my fingertips!

Can go just fine without using it, though it's a pretty nice way to kill time when you're stuck in the airport, waiting for a train, waiting for your friends to show up where you're meeting them, etc.

Also don't get the "call me or else" thing. Texts are so much more efficient for many communications.

Some people just prefer to bitch without understanding it makes them somewhat luddites. Since they didn't grow up with a technology it must be inferior. You're about 2 steps away from needing to ask your kids how to program the VCR, because you fight technology and look only at the bad rather than seeing it as a tool and figuring out how it may be useful.

Having a flip phone today is like having a beeper in 2005 or a VCR in 2010. Yeah, you can handle some of the basic tasks with it, but the functionality is so limited and, frankly, you look like a crazy old man for using one.

I did a quick check. I've had 5 calls on my phone in the past 2 months. I don't use it as a phone. It's a mobile computer/game platform. These days, being able to receive phone calls is a side benefit.

Still rockin the flip phone over here, I'll upgrade when it breaks. Just don't have a need for anything more.

Though I do grow tired of people looking at me like I'm destitute when I pull it out.

That says more about them than you. I pity people that desperate and insecure.

It's not just in social settings. I've had realtors visibly lose interest in dealing with me when they saw my non-smartphone.

Expensive to own, expensive to maintain, and tie you to a single carrier. What's not to love about US smartphones?
