I was disappointed to see no James Bond (007) actors showing up. Digital Spy mentioned this before the event. Rats.  |

Account bans are toothless and users know that judging by the amount of people who re-register, they need to ban by IP. It has the unfortunate side effect of potentially affecting legitimate users but the odds are generally acceptable if you use the proper octet.
Unfortunately if a user really wants to evade a ban it's difficult to prevent them (proxies, VPN, etc) but most people will give up before that unless they're very determined. |

Cutter thanks for mentioning "Moonrise Kingdoms" and "Frank and Robot". Those slipped by my radar completely, and now I have a couple of really good films to watch.
BTW SLP is really a good movie, disregard the scathing reviews and give it a looksee, you will not regret it. |

Sure The Oscars is as much about who you know and how you present yourself as it is about quality but that doesn't have anything to do with Skyfall being a pretty average action movie. In terms of acting, it's well acted enough but again I wouldn't be calling any of those career performances. I don't have a hard on for Oscar bait dramas or something but there were much better movies than Skyfall last year. Heck I wouldn't even rank Skyfall in my Bond top 5. Now Casino Royale, there's some quality cinema. |

Although I disagree with Cutter on Skyfall (Bond has come a long way but its still just an action movie), he's right about the politics.
The Academy is made up of thousands of people who produce and work on all the movies that are voted on. Add to that the massive amounts of money people like Weinstein throw around to support their favorite picture during the awards show run up and you have a fully functional government and lobbyists.
So this year they played it safe, everyone got a nod in their "place". Haneke made a great film and he's foreign so that's a slam dunk. Quentin is obviously writing. Lincoln was the Day Lewis show, here you go best actor. Argo was on a winning streak so they let it take best picture. Same with Hathaway, she gets to represent Miserables.
Okay, what do we have left? Well Ang already has a best picture so we'll just give him director this year. SLP needs something...um how about best actress why not? Of course its not as deliberate as that but that's the mass action effect.
Really the only pictures that didn't get much love were Beasts of the Southern Wild, a first try from everyone involved, and Zero Dark Thirty which was good but IMO not as remarkable as the others.
Actually all the movies in the spotlight this year were pretty great. Last year was awful. If ever there was a year to spread the love around, this was it. (I missed SLP and Beasts). |

That's absolute horse shit. Hans Landa was one of the best characters to grace cinema in years. The opening to Basterds was just absolutely perfect in every respect.

The Oscars has always been a political one trick pony which is why I never watch it. That's just one of the myriad of reasons I loved guys like George C. Scott. He hated the Oscar BS....
Was the first actor ever to refuse an Academy Award (1970, for Patton (1970)). He was followed by Marlon Brando, who also turned down the award for The Godfather (1972). The reason he claimed for missing the ceremony where he won the Oscar was that he was busy watching a hockey game.

Was his turn as Doctor Shultz a major departure? No. Doesn't mean his performance wasn't just as solid. Not every actor needs to try and hit virtually every spot on the spectrum like Day-Lewis does. Christ, Denzel Washington is always getting love and he only ever plays himself. |

None of my favourite films were even nominated, Skyfall, Moonrise Kingdom, Robot and Frank. As always, if it's not a drama or period piece the Oscars passes it over. That's why so many consider it a joke.
And to be fair I've seen just as much hate on SLP. I haven't seen it and don't really intend after some of the scathing reviews I've read.
