EA Layoffs

A post to the EA website by Frank Gibeau has word from the president of EA Labels that Electronic Arts has cut jobs in Los Angeles and Montreal, "as well as in some smaller locations" (thanks Polygon). The post, titled "Transition is Our Friend," takes a generally optimistic tone in looking forward to things like the PlayStation 4 and Battlefield 4 and speaks of the strides EA has made in mobile and free-to-play gaming. This probably doesn't sit perfectly with someone who was just fired, but he offers this outlook:

EA’s leadership on these high-growth platforms allows us to retain and attract the industry’s best talent. Thousands of our existing employees have been retrained and redeployed to work on the new platforms and initiatives. But when it is not possible to redeploy a team, we soften the tough decisions with assistance. This week we let some people go in Los Angeles, Montreal as well as in some smaller locations. These are good people and we have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease their transition to a new job.

Console transitions are a complex and challenging experience. I’ve helped navigate several and agree with an old saying we have at EA: Transition is our friend. All the trend lines are converging to reward the creative and financial investments we have made in mobile and console technology. We have never been more ready or more excited about what comes next.

Isn't this true in every industry? Major corporations have layoffs and management cullings on a semi-regular basis. It is the nature of things.

Truth is brutal. Prepare for pain.

Huge difference. Marketers are all about numbers, not words. PR/Communications are all about words, not numbers. Something like this comes from a Communications person whose job is almost solely to write the releases that come from the mouths of the execs. Most of what they do is internal. They make no business decisions, work with no numbers, and are mostly responsible for keeping rumors to a minimum.

Marketers look at numbers, figure out what people want and how to get it to them.

Well that's simple, people in marketing have no souls.

How do people work at EA and sleep at night (or even be allowed to)?

Your downtime at EA is when you get fired.

Transition is our friend. Firing is our friend. Losing everything you have is our friend. Eating out of dumpsters is our friend.

Heh truth. Unless you're the man at the top, you're never safe in the game industry. But most have made peace with that and realize that they are going to have downtime. It's like guys working construction, they realize they are going to be on unemployment months out of the year when there are no projects going on and the company simply can't use them.

Some industries just have erratic staffing needs, but at the same time can't pay people to just twiddle their thumbs.

Funny, that I was just playing skyrim and one of the NPC's I was hunting down was repeatedly screaming: DEATH IS HIGHLY OVERRATED!!! I wonder if he works for EA.

*shrug*

You sign with EA, you know your ass is going to get fired at some point. If you don't want to run that risk, DON'T FUCKING SIGN WITH EA. (or, for that matter, don't work in the game industry period.)

These days it just seems as becoming a game developer is not the way to go. You're much safer doing a business analyst or PM job.

"These days"? This is hardly anything new. You wanna be in game dev? You're gonna pay the price. Because if you don't want to, there are a thousand other people who would jump at the opportunity.

There's plenty of software development work outside of game dev that isn't business analyst or PM. 8 hours a day, no weekends, no crunch, good pay, respect.

These are good people and we have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease their transition to a new job.

I generally have nothing but contempt for EA but credit where credit is due (even despite the spindoctoring) - it's rare in these press releases that you ever see even an acknowledgment of the people affected, much less a compassionate word.

yes, "transition is your friend" try telling that to a software developer who toiled through endless crunch time, 16 hour days, 7 days a week, never seeing friends/family.

I know lots of non-game developers and programmers who work 8-9 hour days and no weekends.
