Ziff Davis Closing 1UP, GameSpy, and UGO

Ziff Davis is closing down the UGO, 1UP, and GameSpy websites, reports Polygon, based on a memo they say was sent today to employees by CEO Vivek Shah. According to the memo this is to concentrate their efforts on their "flagship" brand in the gaming area, IGN, though the report also includes news of an unspecified number of editorial employee layoffs at IGN. UGO already has a post declaring the site "dead" while 1UP and GameSpy seem unchanged for now, as 1UP's Jeremy Parish tweets: "We won't be killing the site today; I'll post more thoughts later."

Found memories of PlanetQuake and QSpy which eventually became GameSpy3D and an entire network of Planet websites. Definitely a sign of the times. Sad to see anyone lose their job, but at the same time I cannot recall the last time I went to any of those websites.

I want to know what’s going to happen to games that still use game spy as a service for playing games. Does this now mean that once their gone, so are those servers and any ability to now connecting or host games are also gone? Sounds like an EA tactic in the making here.

Wow, sign of the times....

Not only do I not like seeing the end of an era, but that many people losing their jobs sucks even more.

I remember DL the first version of QSpy (before becoming GameSpy) to find the best ping Quake MP server....

wait, WTF about gamefaqs? It was bought out by them a while back Edit: Doh, that was gamespot that they merged with, not gamespy. I could care less about UGO or whatever Edit: And WTF is "askmen" that they say is one of their flagship brands? This comment was edited on Feb 21, 2013, 16:55.
