Ziff Davis Closing 1UP, GameSpy, and UGO

Ziff Davis is closing down the UGO, 1UP, and GameSpy websites, reports Polygon, based on a memo they say was sent today to employees by CEO Vivek Shah. According to the memo this is to concentrate their efforts on their "flagship" brand in the gaming area, IGN, though the report also includes news of an unspecified number of editorial employee layoffs at IGN. UGO already has a post declaring the site "dead" while 1UP and GameSpy seem unchanged for now, as 1UP's Jeremy Parish tweets: "We won't be killing the site today; I'll post more thoughts later."

Well ya can't really say they did NOTHING with it. They did make DoD:Source... then they did nothing with it.

Not surprising.

They killed off Vault Network and Voodoo Extreme a little over a year ago, which pissed me off.

Wasn't Blues part of UGO at one time?
Wow, I did not know ve3d.com stopped updating. I haven't been there for ages. Did it stop in 2012? No announcements either? As for BN with UGO, see the earlier replies in this thread.

To be fair, CS was a complete outlier back then anyway. Any other success remotely on that scale?

Anyway how about DOTA, DayZ?

I was talking to a friend about old gaming sites like Shacknews, etc. What was the gaming site that came out a little before BluesNews way back in the day, something like RedsNews? I can't for the life of me remember.

Redwood's. He show's his smiling face here occasionally.

Stomped.com.

oh wow! Redwood's 3D news and Stomped... i actually visited those sites more than Blue's way back when those sites were still around in the late 90's!

i hope PlanetQuake and PlanetHalf-Life sticks around.

it was the help of these indie sites that helped spread the word of awesome mods like Counter-Strike, but i doubt we'll get a mod hit like CS in the future because all these big gaming news sites these days are just promoting triple 'A' titles and about kissing publishers asses, not giving two shits about the little guy.

Those saying you don't care about UGO closing down probably no idea that Blue's News used to be part of UGO. Without UGO providing initial advertising revenue in the early days who knows if Blue's would be the site it is today. At one time UGO was the largest gaming network on the Internet, with dozens of sites like Daily Radar, Blue's, Shack News, GamePen, Dave's Classics, etc. For those of us who lived through the dot com heyday, this is big (and sad) news.
Ditto. How does BN live these days without UGO?

Blue stopped using UGO because their ads could never be trusted, and as such most people used adblock when visiting here, thus denying him any revenue.

Now that he has more control over the ads, most of the regulars have whitelisted blues, so that he gets more revenue.

(If I'm off in this, Blue, please correct me.)

As for the news, that's just really fucking weird. IGN is their "flagship?" Holy shit, those other sites must have been absolutely fucking TERRIBLE then.

Anyway, I don't read any of them (1UP used to be good, but they went downhill pretty rapidly a few years ago), so whatever. Fuck Ziff Davis. They're the fucking prototype of the Pay me for whatever review score you like! shitsacks that invest the "gaming media." I hope IGN follows suit quickly.

That was my problem too, there was a time (two or three iterations ago) where 1UP had some real talent working for them. These folks were laid off in various rounds of firing and restructuring the current version is a pale imitation that stopped being informative some time ago. I think this is more a comment on the state of true game journalism than any of the individual outlets. The worst part is that "mainstream" journalism doesn't seem able to pick up the slack yet, reading the PS4 coverage where every major outlet has misinformation about the controllers (saying they are touch screens not touch pads) and the enthusiast press' quality is wildly varying even in the same sources it's clear that there's a need for change.

It's a shame that these sites are closing. Even though - I have to admit - I did not frequent them on a regular basis, I appreciate having a wide variety of gaming websites available. But watching websites like this get shut down by the corporate overlords only make me appreciate how good Bluesnews is; seemingly around since forever, it's still independent and provides quality content on a daily basis.

Blue, tell me you aren't going away anytime soon. There's a dearth of worth-while replacements out there and I don't think I could handle a day without my Bluesnews fix...

You only need to look at Blue Tower to know that Blue's ain't goin' nowhere. The site is flush with cash.
Is the inside filled with blue too?

There was a time when I'd visit Planet Half-Life, Quake, Wolfentein, Doom and Unreal several times a day and often find new stuff each time. But I stopped that years ago and the Gamespy "Network" kinda died to me when they killed all hosted websites.

All those ancient Quake sites lost to the ether. Sucks how it turned out.

Really glad Blue's News is around and not going anywhere.
Ditto for those old Planet Games sites.

Soooo glad Planet Vampire was taken over by the fans!
The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

It's sad to see sites die that started similarly to Blue's News. The sites get bigger and then bought out. They then become heavily modified to maximize ad revenue and viewership to the point of looking like every other bloated big name site.

It's nice to see a site like Blue's News stay the same yet remain sustainable.
