Legend of Grimrock 2 Announced

An update on the Legend of Grimrock Website announces development of Legend of Grimrock 2, following up on recent hints about plans to build upon their dungeon crawler with word on a sequel, which does not yet carry a release date. They indicate they plan on posting development updates "as the work progresses," expressing regrets they have not had the certainty about future plans to keep up communications with the community since the release of Legend of Grimrock. They say they contemplated updating the original game before deciding they needed to make a sequel:

Creating a mere DLC or expansion to Grimrock simply would not have felt right. As todays meeting proved, we still have a lot of ideas wed like to explore, lots and lots of new content already done (originally made for a DLC/expansion) and a big engine update in the works. Simply put, a DLC would have limited too much what we can do. With a full blown sequel we can raise Grimrock to the next level.

Thanks you all of your borderline ranty-y postings I went to GoG and picked up Legend of Grimrock and was pleasantly surprised, spellcasting is too clicky but the HD widescreen support a-ok!

Why pay anything for anything when in a hundred years the copyright will expire and it will enter public domain?

You're missing the point, they're lucky I'm even considering buying it at all. It's either I pick it up for $5 or I just forgot about it and start working on the huge backlog of games in my Steam library.

I picked up the first game day 1, the 2nd I can wait.

Why pay $15 when I can pick it up for $7.50 or $5 within a few months?

I don't know, I'm not a cheap fuck and I played 30 hours of Grimrock for $15. And it was fun. Seems pretty fucking fair to me.

Most fun Ive had for 10$ I believe I paid directly from their site. Great fucking game, although some of the puzzles were downright cruel and viscious for my only average IQ....

I will be looking at the second with great interest, hopefully they add more customization options to your characters as well as more role playing elements in the game itself, such as NPCs, quests, and the like....(Maybe even outdoor sections?!)

Basically what I want is Wizardry (of old) in the fancy pretty Grimrock engine

You must not be following Steam sales or sales from any other digital distributor because paying full price, even $15 is not a hot deal.

Why pay $15 when I can pick it up for $7.50 or $5 within a few months? I was pretty clear in my statement, the novelty has worn off for me so it's not worth a day 1 purchase.

This is a case where in a sequel all I want is more instead of different. More classes, more dungeons, more loot, more puzzles, more enemies.

There is more hate on this thread than I thought I'd see.

I played LoG on "hard core" (whatever) mode and beat it. I thought it was pretty fun and will probably buy the sequel.

The only thing I really hated about it was the spell casting interface. That just sucked and I'm sort of disappointed they didn't patch a fix in.

I hope the next one is longer and fixes some of the balance issues. I guess I just didn't expect to see DLC from an indie so I'm not disappointed that there won't be any.

How is it you feel that the lifetime of a game should be only 2 years? Why should someone move onto LoG 2 just because your business needs to survive constantly? Not our problem the business needs to keep 10 people employed with salaries or whatever.

If LoG is so great, then it's the kind of game that goes for 10 years or more. ESPECIALLY SINCE A LEVEL EDITOR WAS RELEASED.

I MEAN, C'MON.

A better question is why you think they should continue with updating and adding to a completed game instead of making a new one when there's little to no benefit to be gained from doing so.

2 years for the lifetime of a game is longer than most games get from bigger publishers. It's well longer than the majority of a game's players are actually around for, too, especially a game tailored more for a hardcore crowd that tends to migrate from game to game more frequently than casual people do.

A level editor means they don't have to keep supporting the game, it means the community can work on and make changes and add to it in a way that they'd never be able to do themselves. Look what Skyrim grew into on PC because of its mod community entirely alongside, or even in spite of, the DLC that Bethesda has released officially.

And if none of that matters at all, it might just be a good idea to remember that businesses exist to make money and them doing something to achieve that goal doesn't make them "fucktards" at all.

Nice, can't wait to play it, loved the first one. Love this style of old-school dungeon crawlers. Hope the singleplayer is longer this time though.

Seconded!

So, even tough LoG was just released, and some of you haven't even tried it yet--well, we don't care, and we're going to--regardless--shove another game down your throats this early in time, because it's all about us and staying in business even though that negatively affects you by the fact that we'd be shoving another game down your throats already."

"Creating a DLC would not have felt right." You mean, not have felt right to your business in the form of profits? Ahh, yes, that's what I thought you meant. Okay.

I'm confused by your post. You obviously have a different perspective on the game and/or the developer, but the game was released nearly a year ago for $14.99, and even less during a promotional launch. LoG II probably won't be release until the end of this year, or first part of next, so how is it they shoved either one down our throats?

I'm just curious, as maybe I'm missing something. HAH, wouldn't be the first time.

so you know, just don't buy the new one?
nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you buy it.

And yes businesses do exist to make money.. but some of them are actually proud of their products and do actually put in real effort rather than just being out to be purely profit focused.

i found the first game a little bit shallow in the combat as well, but was still quite fun.

I enjoyed the first game, but seeing it discounted right away after launch makes me think I might as well wait for it to be half price to buy in. Good game, but better to pay $7 vs $15.

Beat the first game in 28hrs in old school mode according to Steam. Had fun and it scratched an itch but I'm not really jonsing for more. I'll probably pick it up during a Steam sale though.

The combat was fun for a while but a bit shallow for my taste. The puzzles and atmosphere however were great.

Im baffled by your comment, isnt any game that sells for 14.99 a sale? Some of you cheap bastards really are cheap.

I really enjoyed the nostalgia factor, but some parts of the game reminded me of why this style of game died off. I am definitely interested in a sequel, but only if they really flesh out the gameplay or present a new, rich experience.

More than anything, I wish the would take on some of the other styles of classic RPGs.
Give me a new Ultima Underworld game, damn it!
Curious to see what they put out,
Ray

I could have sworn deqer was the one screaming at me and everyone else for not pre-ordering Torchlight 2 because the developers were that awesome and needed my money to keep them afloat.

Oh he certainly did.
