Path of Exile Race Events

The Path of Exile Website has details on the first season of "Race Events" in Grinding Gears' action/RPG, which will get underway on Saturday. As the following announcement explains, this expands on a series of events that proved popular during beta testing:

Auckland, New Zealand--February 21, 2013--Grinding Gear Games announced the first season of race events in the popular action RPG Path of Exile. Race events are short-term leagues separate from the main game with separate characters and varying goals that test the players' skill and luck. Season One commences on Saturday, February 23 and runs for six weeks until April 7 (New Zealand time).

Unlike the self-contained individual races held during Closed Beta, race events are now structured by seasons. There are prizes for the top-place finishers in each race, prizes achieving good results for a set of events in a season, and prizes for placing at the top of the realm overall in a given season. New custom prizes have been created for the events.

"The race events were extremely popular in Closed Beta," said Chris Wilson, producer for Grinding Gear Games. "The leagues generally reward players who can level up quickly and place in the top ranks of their character class, but there are also rewards for meeting objectives like finishing side quests or full-clearing areas first. By structuring the races into seasons, players are motivated to participate in multiple events and it gives them something meaningful to work toward over the course of several weeks."

I just wish there was instanced loot in public parties, the timer is a minor help but in general people at the front of the action get more than their fair share and you have to focus on following drops while fighting and perhaps stop supporting the group to collect otherwise you will lose out. A lot of people vigorously defend it and I can kind of understand but I think being forced to scrap for loot dominates the gameplay too much and is a bit offputting.

GGG should allow the person who creates the "party" to set the timer value where the default value is what it currently is but can be increased to up to let's say 60 seconds. That way it's an OPTION and the "purist's" can maintain there free-for-all loot if they want.

Personally I don't coop with strangers and my peers and I have an agreement that if the loot has/had a name on it then only that perosn picks it up, and if so inclined can share afterwards. Works just fine 99% of the time.

The only downside I've seen so far is that some specs/abilities are ridiculously powerful and others are borderline useless.

eg. My cruel difficulty templar is basically stuck because I didn't invest highly enough in life nodes. Apparently most melee types almost have to use spell totem/skeletons or taunt totem in the highest difficulty purely because you can get instagibbed if you don't have a godlike HP pool or are constantly running granite flasks/endurance/molten shield.

Of course, it's beta and balance is ongoing but I suspect balancing out the skill "constellation" (fuck that thing is impressive) will be a tad difficult.

Well worth the 25 spent so far though.

Yeah it's still in beta, but that's depressing to hear. I guess my dual wield Duelist is probably screwed then. Although he does have molten shield... hrm. Maybe I'll do some more TL2 while the PoE guys do some more work.

Yeah, I've gotta say I love it too. I've played it daily since the beta opened up. I've got a few characters on the go 'cause they're all interesting, my fire witch is l35 I think at the moment and a couple others are in the 20s. I'm tempted to buy some tabs since they do deserve some income from this. With just ethical transactions it will be interesting what sort of cash they make from this.

This game is more of a successor to Diablo II than d3 is. I am in $50 to them and feel it is worth every penny.

That being said, I am way more interested in hardcore cut-throat when they implement that.

This is good that they have this type of event, even though I won't have the time to participate, it's cool for the PoE community overall.

This game is like Diablo 2.5 sitting on a GW infrastrucure, it's pretty interesting.

They will definetly be getting $$$ from me. Game is completely worth it and deserves it.

Hopefully they don't go down the path of AH3, but it doesn't sound like they will.

As did I - I'm probably $60 in just on tabs alone... and I really do suck at the game. I think the highest I've made it before death (Hardcore) is 33.

That being said, I'm still really enjoying it!

Yup, I dropped some coin to deck out my storage container with nice, colorful tags. They need to make their money somehow.

Yep, I did the same. They've done a great job and deserve it.
