January NPD Results

USA Today reveals NPD Group's reporting $834.7 million in North American physical game sales figures for January 2013. Sales are up nine percent over the same period last year, but this is attributable to their accounting methods, rather than an actual uptick, as the results include a "leap week" that's added every few years, presumably to keep calendars in sync. Word is sales would be down 13% if this was tabulated as a typical four-week month. Likewise hardware sales are up four percent, rather than down 17%. Word is: "an additional $141 million was spend on used and rented video games, while $382 million went toward sales of digital video game content such as mobile games and downloadable content."

My problem is simply time. I'd love to have a wiiu. And a 3ds. And the latest sony handheld. But I don't have enough time for the shit in my steam catalog as it is, not to mention anything I'm interested in on the 360.

At some point I end up saying "that's pretty neat, but I have no idea when I'd actually play it".

I am. The thing's never going to sell as well as the Wii but I thought it would do better than that. That said, Nintendo gets into stuff as a marathon, not a sprint. A light launch can be immediately rectified by good software which they have coming. Not a guarantee of course but historically, those who bet against Nintendo usually end up being wrong.

Eh, but the Wii sprinted and barely limped across the finish line.

There was no demand for the WiiU. No hype around it. It kind of came and no one talked about it.

Obligatory NPD's numbers are not representative of entire industry health and are approaching irrelevance post. That said, yeah the industry is still not super healthy right now.
