System Shock 2 on GOG.com

GOG.com now offers digital distribution of System Shock 2, following the revelation that the classic action/RPG was being tweaked for re-release for current computers on the DRM-free marketplace. For the uninitiated (which is unlikely around here), here's what Jason "loonyboi" Bergman wrote here about the game, going on 13 years ago:

Boy am I ever hooked. I haven't enjoyed a single player game this much since Half-Life, and I can't recommend the game any more highly. Of course, it should be pointed out that the game is certainly not for everyone. It's definitely more RPG than action...there's quite a bit of action in it, but if you aren't willing to put up with the skills and inventory system you ain't going to get far. If you can make it past that, you'll find yourself totally addicted, much like I am right now. Oh, and one other thing - make sure you've got a great sound setup for this one. The positional audio is some of the best I've ever heard. Really creepy stuff.

I can confirm the patching program and all the mods installed and work flawlessly on the GOG release. Although if you're new to SS2 it's worth playing vanilla first.

While my nostalgia goggles scream at me SS1 was best (claustrophobia: the game) my brain is willing to admit that 2 was overall superior. OMG I just remembered the goddamn monkeys! DIIIE super monkeys

If you missed this game the first time around, you now have no excuse. It's worth $10.00 even today. I'd buy it again, but I still have my CD, so that would be pointless.

So SS2 is just compatible with newer Windows and hardwares. No DRM, but did the original SS2 have it? Wasn't it just CD required? Nothing else?

Exactly. It's basically the minimum specs for Windows 7 (1GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, DX9 GPU) but with a slightly faster processor. Common sense dictates that the operating system needs to run well if you want to run anything on top of it.

For anyone thinking of buying this because it might somehow offer something new in the way of tweaks or fixes: It just consists of available fan-made patches cobbled together. The links Mad Max RW provided earlier in this thread will provide you all the same fixes and tweaks. In fact, it provides additional tweaks and enhancements they didn't include and it still works right over the top of this GOG release.

Indeed, I haven't played SS2 either. I always had it on my 'To play' list but just never got around to it. I did, at one point in time, play the demo but it didn't really grab my interest. Maybe this time around will be different?
