Ships Ahoy - Aliens: Colonial Marines

SEGA announces that Aliens: Colonial Marines is now available worldwide, offering a new first-person shooter set in the Aliens sci-fi setting for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with a WiiU edition coming at some future date. Here's the official launch trailer for the game, and here's word:

SEGA® of America, Inc., SEGA® Europe Ltd., Gearbox Software and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products® today announced that its highly buzzed-about blockbuster Aliens™: Colonial Marines video game is now available on store shelves across the globe for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows® PC. A release date for the announced Wii U™ version will be revealed at a later time.

Pitting players against the universe’s deadliest killing machine, the Xenomorph, Aliens: Colonial Marines is the official video game continuation to one of Sci-Fi’s most renowned movie franchises. As the authentic addition to the ALIENS canon, the game’s stunning visuals and adrenaline pumping action will deliver a breathtakingly immersive four-player drop-in drop-out cooperative campaign and four expansive competitive multiplayer modes – Escape, Team Deathmath, Survivor and Extermination.

The critical reception for the game so far has been pretty negative, and Eurogamer notes a this tweet and this one from sleuth superannuation pointing to this post from last year that he disregarded at the time. This includes a comment from someone claiming to be an ex-developer on the project saying at the time development had "been a total train wreck," and that Gearbox was only developing the multiplayer portion of a game primarily designed by TimeGate Studios.

I'm thinking nerfed for consoles and/or specially enhanced for that one demo level that didn't turn out to be practical for the whole game.

Haha, seeing that comparison the demo version actually looked good indeed! However, it was already from the moment of that demo footage that I knew for certain that the game was gonna suck so goddamn hard...

Bait and Switch is NOT the right terminology.
That footage is from September 2011.

It would be bait and switch if the footage was from, say, September of 2012.

It's a ripoff and a huge development failure, but it isn't a bait and switch.

Darks wrote on Feb 13, 2013, 11:32:
I have refrained from posting anything here, because most of you have come to the conclusion without even playing one second of the game that it’s bad. I keep reading, I heard, or I read or I had a feeling. Okay, so now everyone bases their gut feeling off of hearsay. I can tell you now after playing Coop last night that this game is being unfairly reviewed and bashed on.

Everyone I played with last night all said the same thing, they cannot understand where all of the hatred for this game is coming from. We played through the first half of the game; it took us 4 hours to get through that. And All I can say is that I was not disappointed at all with what I saw or experienced.
Did I see AI acting Quirky or getting stuck? No! Was the AI attacking us like they should be, yes!

Did we see horrible 2005 looking graphics, again NO! Now, I have heard that the console version has issues, but we saw none of those. I did not see the guy giving CPR to the NPC head. Can stuff f like that happen, sure. It’s a scripted event, sometimes the placement gets moved or this could have been caused by the player pushing on the NPC too. I have seen this happen.

The thing I really liked were the environments; I really think GB got this down really well. The Colony looked great, and the sewers were pretty awesome looking, and creepy. There were a lot of areas that were straight out of the movie. The Alien walls looked right on par with how you would expect them to be from the movie. The Music was perfect, right out of the movie. A lof the weapons were perfect, the pulse rifle sound was exactly like it should be. I know the ones in AVP 2010 were not, they all sounded different. Same goes for the Smartgun it was as it should be.

We played the game on Ultimate Badass mode, and the Aliens were no joke, we died at least 30 times that I can remember, we felt that we wanted to have the aliens as deadly as possible and they did not disappoint. I’m not going to get in to a debate with you all about this, and I’m not going to argue with you all, if you hate the game based on hearsay then so be it. That’s your choice. All I can say is that the reviewers did not review this game correctly, nor did they give this game a chance.

I want to point out an area that I saw a video on, with a suicide alien I saw. When I saw the video I was like, WTF, why did he not attack and why is he upright, well after playing through that area. I now know why, and now makes sense to me. This is a special alien and this is the way they are designed. It’s a mutated version of them from the Processor blast.

When I read someone saying they played it for three mins and that was it. I have to wonder what kind of gamer you really are. There is no way anyone can properly determine that this is a good game after three mins. I also want to point out another comment about the Aliens and there only being 5 points to shot at and hit. This comment made no sense to me, there are more than 5 points to attack an Alien, and you can shot off their heads, arms, and legs. All of this will causes platter acid damage if you are nearby. Were you expecting to shoot off their fingers?

All I can say is that we had a great time playing the game last night. I had to see for myself if all this hearsay was true, and I found out for myself that it was not. The graphics are no way near as bad as some are trying to make this out to be, the textures were not top notch but they were nowhere near low grade either as many are trying to make them out to be. The MP Coop was very stable, we had not one issues in the four hours of anyone getting disconnected or crashing. Is the game perfect, no! But it’s what I was hoping it would be a fun game that I can enjoy playing Coop with friends.

Hate the game or love it, there will always be two sides, but all I know is that the reviewers did not give this game a chance, and I do like this game better over the AVP 2010.

I have seen worsts game than this one get better reviews. I’m not going to respond to the critics, this will lead nowhere. This is what I felt about the game and I personally like this game and so did many others I talked to and played with.

I know some of you were wondering where I was just so you can jump on the bash Darks bandwagon. Again, this is the last you will hear from me on this. I personally feel that if many of you at a later date go back and play this game will have a different opinion about the game and feel that you were unjust in your comments. Then again, maybe not for some of you. But thats how it goes. All I know is that I played it and many of you did not, so that makes me the better judge right now on the game.

My personal take is that the game deserves at least a 7.8

I could "partially" agree with you.
Surely there are worse games around but this game had too many expectations from users. I played every AVP title and this is the worst.
Now I'm playing veteran level and im in the middle of the game after 5 hours. BUT... The graphics aren't 2013 graphics. Lights are ugly, textures are lowres and dark even on max settings. The levels and the encounters are so confusing, the storyline seems to be a bad composed puzzle, the dialogues are pathetic and the same puzzle. The game feels scripted, the overall gaming experience is just bad. I cant get into the marine role, I just play it because of the storyline but I don't feel involved as I should. This game hit the shelves few days ago but it seems a 2008 game. 5.5/10, not more.

You have to go back to the 1999 "A vs P" for a game that got the atmosphere and horror correctly:

Every 10 steps was a strategic decision and the aliens literally waited in the dark and then lunged. Only problem is that there was no save option in the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIYfU-j-gf4
I LOVED that game. I kept hoping the games after that would be even close to that level of goodness. And I liked it also for the story and how you played each race. For instance how with alien you started out as a little crawler, and worked your way up the lifecycle chain.
Edit: I may be thinking about AVP2, not sure.

THATS what we should do...we'll have a game club where you have to play through as much of a game as you can, only we'll pick the worst one possible. Whoever gets the farthest (with screenshot) "wins".

Isn't that kinda what's done at the desert bus fundraiser?

Then this must be a GREAT GAME! RUN OUT AND BUY IT NAO!

(yes I get what you are saying, but you can at least get a general tone out of reviews, and a feel for if its a category you will like. And in this case, the metacritic scores from PLAYERS are actually WORSE than the ones from the all these uncommon bad reviews, if you can believe that)

It's ok for Randy to mug for the cameras and make grandiose claims about the games quality in your little world. The second anyone questions it based on the available game, preview material, demos and anything else, suddenly there's a problem? Total fucking hypocrisy.

That's just paranoia, it's a game, this isn't The Manchurian Candidate. It's ok for Randy to do countless press interviews fully knowing all of the games problems but other people who point out something they don't like about the game are out to smear it? No that is bullshit. The game is everything people expected it to be and you don't want to admit that you like a bad game because that might say something about your taste. That's your insecurity and that's your problem, not ours. No one cares, go play your game and be happy. If you didn't like a game I thought was fun I would shrug my shoulders and go about my day because it doesn't fucking matter.

First off, let’s be clear about this. I never once told anyone that they had to buy this game. My defense of this game came from people piling on the hatewagon of this game before anyone had even played it. There have been some screen shots released showing off the Xbox version. And yes I think some have even got the extent of purposely trying to smear this game.

But I never once said, you all need to go and buy this game. Sorry, do not put words into my mouth. I know what I said. And I stand by it.

Exactly. I thought Far Cry 2 was an excellent game and was better than Crysis graphically but I know that's not a popular opinion around here. Personally I think it's good that Darks wants to correct people and defend his position because that's he believes but I personally disagree. I don't need to play the game to know that it's bad because - I have review sites that I trust, gameplay videos, review aggregate sites and user opinions to rely on. Are they always right? Of course not but I know that I'm not willing to pick this game up for any more than £10 / $15 and almost certainly not even at that price.

But to be clear I have no intention of defending this game or be seen to be defending it

However, Darks and anyone else has a right to express their opinion, just as much as anybody. Negative != Right, it's just another point of view. People are trying to convince Darks and others it's crap, by saying "see look at the reviews". Anyone is allowed to counter that.

Why bother? It's a sense of injustice. If you feel something is being wrongly attacked, you step in and stand up for it. Other than that it's just about joining a discussion and having your voice heard.

There were people who loved Duke Nukem Forever also and did not understand why everyone else hated it.
If you like the game by all means enjoy it and just skip this forum all together but please don't try to convince people to have the same opinion about a game that you have.

Obviously there is no demo so everyone who is not sure about this game has to judge it by gameplay videos and reviews.
For example Dishonored did not have a demo either, but most reviews and friends who bought it assured me it is a fun game, I watched some let's play vids and liked what I saw, so I got it, and I was not disappointed with it.
