Disney is creating Disney Infinity, which is a ripoff of Skylanders. I think that was his point. I was originally going to say the same thing, but I think he meant it in the sense of "why do you think disney is so quick to hop on that money train".
Heh, that's the problem with text, no nuance. I read it straight up, he wrote it as rhetorical.

I think this is less "how can we rip kids off as much as possible" (see: Beanie Babies, pogs) and more "how can I make something that would have blown my 8-10 year old mind?" (see: Pokemon.)
That doesn't mean clever marketing isn't part of it, but if the people are making something to sell a lot it will fail. Kids can sense that. It has to legitimately be fun and something of a labor of love. Agree strongly. My kids LOVE this game, they even saved up the money to buy the sequel themselves (although I eventually bought it for them for Xmas). They are 7 and 9, both girls.
Like Pokemon, the appeal is across a broad age range and both genders. Genius. |

no, its because 99 looks like a smaller number than 100 and people are still impulsive animals - its a marketing trick that has become cliche and rote, but its still a marketing trick.. if they really thought it was pointless, nobody would still be doing it

However, it is fascinating how these thing gain traction. Remember stuff back in the day like the madness around trying to get Cabbage Patch Kids or Tickle Me Elmos at Xmas duing the height of their popularity? |

| I was just in a Best Buy that had an XBOX 360 display with a demo of Skylanders. There were kids everywhere, parents trying to pull them away....crazy. Looking at the video and the game demo though, if I was a kid in the target age, I would be all over that stuff. My toys in my video games? Sign me up. If all my GI JOE or Tranformers could have been done like that...holy crap that would have blown my 8-10 year old mind. |
